14 gorgeous cabin rentals in Michigan for year-round fun, including summer lake rentals and cozy A-frames

FAQ: Michigan vacations

When is the best time to visit Michigan?

Michigan is a great place to vacation year-round. Summer is popular for hiking and biking, in addition to water sports and lounging on the lakefront beaches.

Michigan is also known for its beautiful autumns when the foliage changes to vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds from September through October. This is also a popular season for wine tours, particularly throughout the Traverse Wine Coast, which has about 40 wineries.

In the winter, many enjoy snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice fishing, in addition to visiting the many wineries, breweries, and restaurants the state is known for.

What are the best towns to stay in?

The optimal town to stay in will depend on your interests and the attractions you’d like to see. If you’re looking for a lake experience, but don’t want to break the bank, renting a cabin on an inland lake is the best option.

If you like the best of what the outdoors and the city have to offer, Traverse City, Leland, and Holland are great places to explore. Glen Arbor, Empire, and Leland are close to Sleeping Bear Dunes and Munising and Grand Marais are great towns to stay in if you’re interested in exploring Pictured Rocks.

What are the best lake towns in Michigan?

No matter what region of Michigan you plan on visiting, there are plenty of lake towns with top-notch beaches, outdoor activities, and unique attractions, which makes it difficult to choose the best. I always recommend visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks, which have some of the most picturesque beaches and views, along with Traverse City, which has both the beauty and the proximity to wineries, breweries, and excellent restaurants.

These, however, can come with a price tag, which is why I also recommend selecting a small inland lake to stay on, and then taking day trips to other towns.

I grew up going to a cabin on Big Star Lake in Baldwin, and some of my most memorable experiences are being able to enjoy the small-town lakehouses and forests, while also taking day trips further north to hike, swim, and explore the larger cities.

Are there beaches in Michigan?

Home to the five Great Lakes, Michigan has thousands of miles of lakeshore with a variety of sandy beaches on the coast of the mitten-shaped state. Most towns along Lake Michigan Lake Superior have several public beaches with amenities like bathrooms and vendors. From the dunes of Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore to Grand Haven State Park and Saugatuck’s Oval Beach, there’s plenty of beaches to explore.

If you prefer a smaller lakehouse experience, there are thousands of small inland lakes across the state, many surrounded by small, private beaches and secluded forests. Many of these also include small sections of public beaches, as well as boat launches.

Is it safe to stay in a vacation rental?

According to the CDC, it’s safe for vaccinated individuals to travel in the US. Experts also say that Airbnbs can be safer than hotels. All of the Airbnbs follow an enhanced cleaning protocol and you can find the cleaning process for each Vrbo rental on its listing page.

Each of these listings is for the entire home, which allows for safe social distancing and limited interactions with others. While any travel can pose a risk, we recommend following CDC guidelines for safety.
