Twenty years have passed since that attack that changed the world, especially in what has to do with security and relations between countries. Two decades after this event, the cinema has not been indifferent, to the extent that an extensive selection of series and films about 9/11 can be made.

This guide brings together productions such as the shocking documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 and director Spike Lee’s proposal in which he addresses current New York without neglecting those who were eyewitnesses to the attacks. How much is life worth? (2021)

Based on a true story, the film follows a lawyer who has the almost impossible task of deciding how to compensate the families who suffered incalculable losses after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. Is one life worth more than another? Is one of the questions that will have to be answered. Given by Sara Colangelo (The kindergarten teacher), the film stars Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, and Amy Ryan.


Tipping point: 9/11 and the war on terror (2021)

From the origin of al Qaeda in the 1980s to the attack of September 11, 2001, this series by Brian Knappenberger provides broad context through unpublished material. There are five parts that make up this production, with an approximate duration of 60 minutes each. It includes interviews with survivors, the White House rationale for the secret surveillance program and improved interrogation techniques, the war in Afghanistan, and the US attempt to end its longest battle.


World Trade Center (2006)

From director Oliver Stone, this drama follows a pair of Port Authority cops, who were among the first to take action after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Some of the critics praised Stone’s patriotic tone. in this film starring Nicolas Cage, Michael Peña, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maria Bello and Stephen Dorff.

United 93 (2006)

Paul Greengrass writes, co-produces and directs this production, which tells the story of the passengers, crew and families on the ground of United Airlines Flight 93 before, during and after it was made the fourth plane hijacked in the terrorist events of the 11 of September. It was included in several critical lists of the best films of 2006 and stars Christian Clemenson, Cheyenne Jackson, David Alan Basche and Peter Hermann.


Zero Dark Thirty (2012)

The intelligence work and the assault that ended with the death of Osama bin Laden are narrated in this fictional film by Oscar-winning Kathryn Bigelow, with a script by Mark Boal. The film garnered five Oscar nominations and its cast comprised the likes of Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler and Édgar Ramírez.

Reign Over Me (2007)

Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler) was never the same again after he lost his family in the September 11 attacks. It’s been five years of that. One day, he runs into Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle), who had been his roommate in college. Soon, the two men begin to coexist, however, the theme of death is present, with a Charlie who seeks to avoid it at all costs. What do you both have to learn from the situation? The cast is completed by Jada Pinkett Smith, Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland and Saffron Burrows.

In the shadow of the Towers: September 11 in Stuyvesant (2019)

The attack on the Twin Towers is related from the perspective of those enrolled in a secondary school located a few blocks from the buildings. Thus, a series of testimonies is included on how the terrorist attack transformed the lives of the students. Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)

The great impact of this documentary by the American Michael Moore, which won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, cannot be denied. The production exposes the causes and consequences of the September 11 attacks, and refers to the subsequent invasion of Iraq by the United States and Great Britain. The title of the film refers to the renowned novel Fahrenheit 451by Ray Bradbury.

11/9: Inside the President’s War Room (2021)

This Apple TV Plus and BBC special addresses the September 11 event “through the eyes of the presidency.” Narrated by Jeff Daniels, the documentary recounts the 12 hours after the attack, the dilemmas of decision-making against the clock. Some of the testimonies it collects are those of George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, Andy Card and Dan Bartlett, in addition to almost 200 photographs never before published.

According to Apple, this award-winning musical tells the true story of 38 flights that were stranded in a small Canadian city on September 11, 2001. The local population welcomed those who had come from afar and, together, found hope. Recorded on Broadway, this material is directed by Christopher Ashley. Without a doubt, another look at those events that shook the world 20 years ago.

Renowned Spike Lee is credited as producer and director of this four-part documentary essay, which addresses 21st-century New York without neglecting those who witnessed the 2001 attack. Lee produced more than 200 interviews, including those of first responders, politicians and journalists, and begins his account of the ongoing pandemic and the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement, which originated after the death of Citizen George Floyd. This chorus of voices reflects the diversity of the city.


9/11: a day in the United States (2021)

From the first impact to the last rescue is told by this documentary produced in association with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. The six-episode docuseries

explore archives and testimonies of survivors and emergency teams. In accordance with National Geographic, the production takes a comprehensive and intimate look at how the events of 20 years ago impacted so many lives, and shows the heroic acts of strangers helping each other save.
