102 minutes elapsed on September 11, 2001 between the first impact against the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center (WTC) and the collapse of the emblematic buildings in the financial heart of the United States. This chronology of the attacks from 9/11 reflects the moments that shook the world.

The American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 with 92 people on board, crashes into the North Tower of the World Trade Center (WTC), in the first of three attacks that the terrorist group Al Qaeda managed to carry out. The plane had taken off at 7:59 am ET from Boston’s Logan International Airport bound for Los Angeles, but was hijacked by five attackers during the first 15 minutes of the flight.

One of the first records known to the world was captured by the French documentary maker Jules Naudet –author of the documentary. 9/11-, who was at the intersection of Church Street and Lispenard Street in Manhattan, filming a documentary about the work of firefighters.

Another record was captured by the Czech tourist Pavel Hlava, from a vehicle located at the entrance to the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel, on Interstate 478, about two kilometers from the Twin Towers.

15 minutes had passed since the first plane hit the North Tower. All the US networks broadcast live, although there was still no certainty that it was an attack. However, when the United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower there was no doubt: the United States was the victim of a terrorist attack.

The Boeing 767 had taken off at 8:14 am ET with 65 people on board and would also cover the Boston-Los Angeles route. As in the first plane, the group of captures was made up of five members of Al Qaeda.

9:34 am

President George W. Bush was meeting with some second-grade students from the Emma E. Booker Elementary School from Sarasota County, Florida, when White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card informed him that a second plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. The first impact had occurred ten minutes before his arrival at the school.

The plane crashed at 9:37:44 am ET, killing the plane’s occupants and 125 people at the Pentagon.

After burning for just over 56 minutes, the South tower of the WTC collapsed, causing a gigantic dust cloud that spread for several blocks. Official investigations established that the impact – which damaged the building’s steel infrastructure – and the fire caused by the approximately 38,000 liters of fuel from the plane were the causes of the collapse.

10:03:11 am

A fourth plane was hijacked by four members of Al Qaeda and was targeting the Capitol. The United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757 with 44 people on board, had taken off at 8:41 am from New Jersey for San Francisco. Although the terrorists managed to take control of the plane, the passengers were already aware of the attacks on the WTC, so they fought to recover it. Under pressure, the attackers crashed him into a Pennsylvania field. The episode is portrayed in the movie United 93.

The WTC North Tower it remained under fire for 102 minutes, until its structure finally gave way. Structural damage caused by the impact of the plane and the explosion caused by the fuel. A third building, World Trade Center 7 (WTC 7), collapsed at 5:20 p.m., due to damage caused by the collapse of the other two buildings.
