A friar from the Monastery of Poblet arrested for a case of sexual abuse

A friar from the Monastery of Poblet (Tarragona) has been arrested by the Mossos d’Esquadra after receiving a complaint for alleged sexual abuse of a minor. The religious center itself has issued a statement in which it explains that the events occurred on August 15 and the subsequent complaint was filed this Wednesday.

The Catalan police are investigating the events that, according to the first information, would be touching a minor inside the monastery. The accused is in custody and will be brought to justice in the next few hours, in addition to having already been separated by the abbey.

According to the statement issued by the Monastery, Abbot Octavi VilĂ  informed both the rest of the ecclesiastics and Rome of the events. After that, “in accordance with the Council of the Monastery”, the monk has been prohibited from exercising his “capitular rights, carrying out any pastoral activity and abandoning the enclosure,” according to the statement issued.

In the same vein, the Monastery informs that the prior canonical investigation has been opened “always in accordance with civil legislation” in order to “report the facts to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith” as soon as possible. The community also states that it will collaborate with the police and judicial authorities to clarify the facts and “purge the responsibilities” that may arise, “always respecting the right to the presumption of innocence” of the accused.

“In a special way, we want to show our solidarity and support with all those who may feel affected by these events, particularly with the family of the minor,” the statement ends.
