A statue of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, recently unveiled in the municipality of Atlacomulco, in the State of Mexico, in the center of the country, was shot down at dawn this Saturday.

The statue was unveiled, on December 29, by the mayor of Atlacomulco, Roberto Téllez Monroy, of the President’s National Regeneration Movement (Morena) party, this before the end of his administration on December 31.

The effigy of the Mexican president was placed in the main square of the aforementioned municipality, which stands out for being a place from which renowned politicians have emerged, belonging to the former ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), including former president Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018 ),

In images published on social networks, the sculpture, designed in pink quarry and 1.8 meters high, appears on the ground, in front of the base that supported it but no head or legs.

It is also appreciated that the concrete base is kept with the plate on which it was engraved «Lic. Andrés Manuel López Obrador. President of Mexico 2018-2024 ».

At the beginning of September and before a debate on statues, the Mexican president assured that «It is no longer time to worship personalities». And he specified that “in my case I have written in my will that I do not want my name to be used to name any street, I do not want statues, I do not want my name to be used to name a school, a hospital, absolutely nothing.”

The figure was made by artisans from the municipality of Tlalpujahua, in the state of Michoacan and, according to information, it had a cost of 50,000 pesos (about $ 2,440), which according to the mayor himself he paid.

«Honor to whom honor is due. The honest man is the one who measures his right by his duty. (Henri Lacordaire) “, wrote the mayor on social networks while publishing photographs of the statue in the middle of the week.
