Ada Colau calls the state housing law “insufficient” and will try to modify it

The mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, has described the housing law prepared by the Government as “insufficient” and has announced that the council will try to influence the wording of the regulations, so that it incorporates “at least” the level of regulation that had the Catalan law suspended by the Constitutional Court.

In an interview in Catalunya RadioColau has advanced that they are going to be “proactive” and that, in an unusual move by the Barcelona council, they are going to present “their own amendments, with a constructive will”, since the Catalan capital, with 40% of the inhabitants living in a rental apartment, it is one of the most “affected” cities.

“It is true that it is not usual for a council to get involved in the drafting of a bill”, pointed out the mayor of the Catalan capital, “but we have a lot to say”. Colau has indicated that his City Council will try to influence so that the regulations “regulate rents, generate alternatives to evictions of vulnerable people and set financing”, Colau has stressed, adding that without this last element “housing policies cannot be made” . The mayor has confirmed that she has already communicated it to the Ministers of Social Rights, Ione Belarra (UP), and Transport, Raquel Sánchez (PSOE).

Colau has also pointed out that the Catalan law, approved by ERC and Junts and that included limits on the rental price, was shown to be “effective” until its suspension, so that the state regulations that are being processed in the Congress of Deputies should incorporate “ at least” the precepts of the Catalan.
