After much anticipation, the red team finally opened the curtain on AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution at Computex 2021. Its upscaling feature is positioned to challenge Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), improving frame rates by more than 200 percent in some 4K games with ray tracing enabled.

What is AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution?

FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is AMD’s response to Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) from Nvidia. Like DLSS, FSR is an image enhancement feature that makes a game appear to be rendering at a higher resolution than it actually is.

So the engine can render the game at 1080p, then FSR steps in to fill in the missing pixels to make it look like 1440p output. However, FSR is not just a copy of DLSS.

Nvidia’s technology works by training an artificial intelligence (AI) model with high-quality offline scans (for example, a 16K still frame). Then DLSS can fill in the additional information in a frame using the artificial intelligence model.

FSR works a little differently, it doesn’t use machine learning and does not require any training per game. Developers can implement it independently of AMD, without the need for specialized hardware or drivers.

Also unlike DLSS, AMD is taking an open approach to FSR. The entire FidelityFX suite works on many generations of GPUs from AMD and Nvidia. At launch, the feature is supported on RX 6000, RX 5000, RX 500, and 400 GPUs, as well as Nvidia GTX 10-series, 16-series, and RTX 2000 and 3000 cards. Ryzen processors with Radeon graphics are also supported.

FSR offers four quality modes: Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, and Performance. Ultra quality increases the frame rate while preserving as much detail as possible. Lower down, each performance mode offers a higher frame rate at the cost of image quality, rendering at lower resolutions and using more extreme sharpness to compensate.

How does FidelityFX Super Resolution work?

FidelityFX Super Resolution is a “shadow-based” scaling technique that occurs towards the end of the rendering process. Take an image rendered at a lower resolution than the native resolution set by the player and perform two passes to improve its visual quality so that it is more similar to the native resolution.

The first is an edge reconstruction upscaling algorithm, which attempts to recreate the image as having a higher resolution than it is. Then a secondary sharpening pass adds additional clarity to the image.

The input resolution with which the algorithm will work depends on the FSR quality mode chosen by the user. For 4K output, where native is 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, FSR Ultra Quality would render at 2,954 x 1,662. It uses 2,560 x 1,440 for Quality mode, 2,259 x 1,270 for Balanced mode, and 1,920 x 1,080 pixels for Performance mode.

In lower quality modes, developers can choose to use a more aggressive approach to compensate for the lower input resolution. This can result in the appearance of sharpness artifacts, as we noticed in our tests.

Like DLSS, the technique is most effective when the scaling algorithm has more information to work with: at higher native resolutions. However, FSR can perform well at 1080p, or even lower resolutions, potentially allowing some of the older GPUs to support games that would otherwise have been impossible to run.

When can FidelityFX Super Resolution be used?

Right now! AMD debuted FSR during its Computex 2021 keynote address and followed up with a general release on June 22. All you need to take advantage of it is one of the many supported GPUs, the latest Radeon controller, and one of the games that has an FSR setting.

The feature is currently only available for PC, although we expect AMD to introduce it to RDNA 2-based Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 at some point. When it comes to consoles, FSR will become an important part of the game development process.

A DLSS killer?

Between DLSS and FSR, there are already big differences in quality and support. DLSS 2.0 is by far the most impressive magnification technology, offering an astonishing performance improvement with limited visual artifacts. It also has a wide range of support games, with more than 40 existing titles supporting DLSS 1.0 or 2.0 in some form, and another 20 planned for next year.

DLSS is limited to Nvidia’s RTX graphics cards, which are incredibly expensive and rare. FSR is compatible with almost all graphics cards released in the last five years, and its scaling is effective and has limited visual impact at higher quality settings.

That could be a huge game changer for those using older or limited graphics cards, and it gives AMD fans with high-end GPUs much better performance when using ray tracing.

The only problem is the limited games that it is available on at the moment. However, with its more open stance and wider hardware support base, that seems likely to change.
