The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has indicated on Twitter that the event took place at 09:15 local time. That individual tried to enter the visitor control facilities and when the alarms were activated, he began his escape on Interstate 71.
“The FBI, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and local authorities are on the ground near Wilmington, Ohio trying to resolve this serious incident,” the agency said in its brief statement. According to an official agent in a televised press conference, he was armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a nail gun.
The suspect has fired several times at law enforcement while fleeing, but no injuries have been reported.
