Analysis iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max: less eyebrow and better camera
Better portrait mode
New blue color
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max arrive with a smaller eyebrow than their predecessors, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. In this analysis of both phones, I will undoubtedly tell you some pros and cons that you should know, in particular if you are about to buy one of them. I will try to answer questions like:
- How does the 120Hz screen of the iPhone 13 Pro Max work?
- Do you notice a difference with a smaller eyebrow?
- How does the cinematic mode of the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max work?
- Are the camera and portrait mode changes on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max good or bad?
- When do the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max come out in Mexico and the United States?
Here we go.

In this article I will refer interchangeably to the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max because their characteristics, except for the size or the battery, are identical.
I have used the iPhone 12 Pro Max for a whole year, and before the iPhone 11 Pro Max and I can give proof of the evolution of this series. In particular, although they look very similar on the outside, on the inside the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a better chip, the A15 Bionic processor, which has been paired with a new graphics processing card.
The battery of the new cell phone lasts much longer, its screen has a new refresh rate and a smaller eyebrow and its camera has improvements in portrait mode, a new cinematic mode and better night mode.
Certainly the aesthetic evolution is not that great, and we find in particular a larger camera module and a new shade of blue, the Sierra Blue, which replaces last year’s Pacific Blue.
Those are some changes, now I will tell you the news that you can enjoy if you decide to buy this cell phone.
If something is true, it is that we have at least two years waiting for the evolution of the iPhone panel, and perhaps Apple applies that saying of “better late than never”, because it has finally incorporated a variable screen refresh rate of up to 120Hz . Apple explained that this rate automatically changes to save energy when the activity you do does not require it.
In my tests, the screen feels smoother, video games look much better, and overall, I got a great experience that brought me to the level of phones like the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
The overall front design is similar to last year, but the big difference is the eyebrow, which is reduced by 20%. To be honest, I’m so used to it, that I hardly notice it, but for those who wanted it to go away, at least it is gradually reduced.
If something evolved in this iPhone, it is its cameras. It still has three with 12 megapixels, but the sensors change to give us a wide-angle sensor that is much more illuminated, which allows us a combination of photographs with better color. I was particularly impressed by the change in portrait mode, because now photos of this type can capture a person completely and not just their bust as with previous iPhones, which when activating this mode asked you to get very close to the main subject of the photo.
If you check the gallery there is a photo of a person eating. The photo with greater clarity and brightness is from the iPhone 13 Pro Max, do you notice something different? It is a portrait, in which two things happen: we have more information about the scene, and more light. In contrast, the dark photo of the same staff was taken with the iPhone 12 Pro Max in portrait mode. That’s what I used to mean by evolution.
Apple also released a new automatic portrait mode, which looks pretty good, and for which the company will offer an update to prevent it from being automatic on photos and videos.
Apple also launched new color profiles, which will allow you to define one of them to always take photos in midmo mode. Among them we find the standard mode, intensified contrast, colorful, warm and cool.
Something totally new is the cinematic mode of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Here you will find that Apple serves us its blur or bokeh video format, in which we can select an object and person to be in focus, and make the rest remain in the background.
Something I learned is that the objects cannot be very far from the camera or from each other, because that would cause the mode to not work. Although you don’t need a tripod to use it, I recommend it, so you have your hands free to focus and blur to your liking.
Something that I liked is that if you made a mistake recording, then you can change the focus on editing on the same iPhone, so this is a luxury.
In my tests I must report that the battery of the iPhone 13 Pro Max – whatever its quantity, since Apple never reveals it – is definitely much better. Using it all day I managed to stick with around 30% at the end of the night and have battery the next day, a great feat for an iPhone that wants to improve and have better energy efficiency.
If we talk about its performance, the A15 Bionic chip does not flinch from different activities you perform on the phone. Neither playing big games nor using it all day you will notice that the device feels slow, much less now that it flies at 120Hz per second.
