The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, welcomed the announcement by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, on the reform of the Penal Code that will replace the crime of sedition with one of aggravated public disorder. “The elimination of the crime of sedition is an essential step in dejudicialization,” he assured in a message. “We continue to work to completely end the repression and be able to vote in a referendum. To resolve the political conflict and freedom”, added Aragonès.
The head of the Government has called an appearance for this Friday at 9 am to react to the announcement made by Sánchez in an interview on La Sexta. The president explained that PSOE and United We Can register a legislative initiative on the reform of the Penal Code this Friday. According to Sánchez, the objective is “to modernize, to standardize the criminal code with regard to the crime of sedition.”
In a brief statement, ERC has also shown its satisfaction with the agreement. “We value very positively the suppression of the crime of sedition from the Penal Code. The elimination of sedition is a great step forward, an essential step in the direction of ending political repression due to the conflict between Spain and Catalonia”.
From the independence party they have remarked that the change in the sedition is the result of the “political negotiation between both governments” and “it would not have been possible without the ERC’s commitment to the negotiated route”.
The leader of the opposition in Catalonia, Salvador Illa, has also written a message on Twitter with the news in which he has pointed out: “Look forward. This is the way”. The PSC had been strongly defending the need for this reform, although the Socialists have made it clear that they are not seeking to benefit anyone in particular.
From United We Can, the president of the group in Congress, Jaume Asens, has applauded that “finally the repeal of the crime of sedition is presented”. “We have fought for it since the beginning of the mandate”, assured the deputy, who has indicated that “Sánchez thus fulfills his word to homologate our Penal Code to Europe, as he agreed with us”. For Asens, with this reform “the right to protest wins, the social groups and the dejudicialization of the territorial conflict. Democracy wins.
