Are 10,000 steps a day good for our health? | Digital Trends Spanish

Many smartwatches and fitness tracker apps recommend that people take 10,000 steps a day. However, now a scientific study ensures that this figure is not correct.

The University of Massachusetts carried out an investigation based on 15 previous works on the number of steps, the state of health and the habits of more than 47,000 people from Europe, Asia, Australia and North America.

Thus, according to this analysis, the number of steps that people should take a day to have a healthier life is around 6,000. Of course, the researchers point out that this number is highly dependent on age, although they say it is never close to 10,000.

Although a young person can walk 7,000 to 8,000 steps instead of 6,000, the scientists found no evidence that this might be better for health. The study authors also stress that this figure should not be considered for people who are overweight or in poor health.

Another important point of the investigation is to conclude why the suggestion of daily steps reaches 10,000. In this sense, the researchers believe that the companies that develop these applications could have chosen that number since it is “closed” and easy to remember. Also, experts say that it is the easiest number for apps to sell.

In any case, taking 10,000 steps a day is never going to be harmful to your health, so the researchers estimate that it could also be a number to consider from time to time, although they point out that this number should not be imposed as an obligation.
