At least 11 dead in bus accident in Bolivia

At least 11 people were killed and 18 injured when a bus fell off a cliff in central Bolivia’s Cochabamba department on Saturday, authorities said.

“The causes are still being investigated,” said the director of Cochabamba Transit, Rensso Elwis Mercado.

The authorities did not say how many people were traveling in that vehicle that fell from a height of 400 meters while traveling between the town of Kami and the capital of the region, about 160 kilometers to the east.

“The driver is among the injured. He can help us clear up many doubts. However, we are still investigating,” Mercado added in statements to local television.

Among the deceased is a child and two others were taken to a hospital, according to traffic police.

According to the latest figures available from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), 1,096 people died in Bolivia due to traffic accidents in 2020 and 10,313 were injured. That year, 13,741 traffic accidents were recorded.
