Around 200,000 people have been evacuated to safe places. The local newspaper The Paper He added that, in addition, five people have been hospitalized for flood-related injuries. 12 people have died in the provincial capital, Zhengzhou, trapped in the subway, as reported by Reuters. Four others have died in Gongyi City.
Since Tuesday, the emergency level for meteorological disasters has been at the maximum in the city of Zhengzhou due to downpours that are expected to last until Wednesday night.
The amount of rain that usually falls in a year (640mm) has fallen in just three days. According to local authorities, between Monday at 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. 552 mm of water fell.
“This rain is seen once in a hundred years. The situation is discouraging,” the Zhengzhou flood control center said on Tuesday.
The videos that circulate on social networks show flooded streets, avenues that look like rivers and even subway cars with passengers inside with more than one and a half meters of water.
The Xinhua news agency has also detailed that the rainfall has left several residential buildings without tap water or electricity, in addition to having forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights, bus and train routes.
The province of Henan, for its part, has placed its emergency level at 2 (the maximum is 1, out of a scale of 4), and has warned that the rainfall had rapidly raised the water level of a dam, for what has been evacuated to all the inhabitants of the localities located in the low part of the fluvial course.
