Five people were killed and more than 40 injured when a pickup truck ran over a barricade and rammed into a Christmas parade in a Milwaukee suburb on Sunday. The event turned a joyous scene with marching bands and dancing children into horror.
Waukesha town authorities confirmed the deaths in a statement Sunday night. The numbers could vary as many people reached hospitals on their own.
At first the names or ages of the dead were not published.
There was a “person of interest” being detained, according to Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson, who did not give details about the person or any possible motive. An investigation was underway, with assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
“What happened today in Waukesha is sickening, and I am completely confident that those responsible will be brought to justice,” tweeted State Attorney Josh Kaul, the head of state security forces.
Several videos posted on social media show the car speeding towards where the parade was taking place. In one of these videos, shots can be heard, just at the moment when the vehicle jumps the police cordon to enter the parade area.
