At least five people have died this Monday in a shooting at the July 4 celebrations in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago, where hundreds of people participated in the parade for the United States national holiday. According to local authorities there are also 16 injured hospitalized.
The Highland Park City Council has reported on its Facebook page that the Police were responding to “an incident” in the center of the municipality and that the parade for the Independence Day of the United States, which is celebrated on July 4, had been cancelled. A witness cited by the Chicago SunTimes indicates that at least 20 shots were heard.
According to the newspaper Chicago TribuneGovernor of Illinois, Democrat Jay Robert “JB” Pritzker, was in the parade. Illinois Democratic Party Congressman Sean Casten has commented on his Twitter profile: “Only in America do families have to run away and get shot during a parade. We cannot allow armed violence to continue for another day.”
