At least one dead from the collapse of a 12-story residential building in Miami

A building of 12 floors The waterfront partially collapsed in Florida on Thursday, leaving at least one dead, as authorities launched a major operation to search for survivors.

Video footage showed a significant portion of the building, in the town of Surfside, just north of Miami Beach, reduced to rubble and with the interior of the apartments in sight.

“My police chief told me that we transported at least two people to the hospital this morning and one died. We catered to 10 people on siteSurfside Mayor Charles Burkett told NBC.

Rescued from their balconies

It was not clear how many people resided in the building or who was occupying it at the time of the incident. Some were able to get out on their own by the stairs while others had to be rescued from their balconies.

Burkett said dogs are involved in the search but “tragically” no survivors had been found so far. “Apparently when the building collapsed it fell on itself, so they don’t find any gaps or see many empty spaces from the outside.”

It is not yet known why the building collapsed, the mayor added. “It is as if a bomb had exploded but we are very sure that a bomb did not explode, so it is something else.

Santo Mejil, a resident of the area, said his wife, a caregiver, was in the building when it collapsed. “She said she heard a loud bang. It felt like an earthquake, “he told the Miami Herald newspaper, sobbing as his wife called him again to say that she was being evacuated from the place.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava lamented the “horrible tragedy” and sent condolences to those affected. “We are very grateful to @MiamiDadeFire, @MiamiBeachFire and all the first aid in place; to stay safe while working to save lives, “he said. Miami Beach Police said they were “helping the city of Surfside with the partial collapse of a building.” “Several Miami-Dade police and fire agencies are attending,” he said. According to local media, the building was built in 1981 and had 130 units.
