Bachelet wants facial recognition AI to be regulated | Digital Trends Spanish

Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, called for a halt to the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems that threaten civil liberties, such as those used to determine who gets a job.

During a presentation to the UN Human Rights Council, the former president of Chile asked to halt development “until adequate safeguards have been put into effect.”

“We cannot continue to react belatedly to the effects of AI, nor allow it to be used in an unlimited way, without borders or supervision, to then face its almost inevitable consequences on human rights,” said the high commissioner.

The report presented to the council, analyzed the use of AI in automatic profiling systems, decision making and other learning technologies for machines and concludes that they can violate the right to privacy and others related to health, education, freedom of movement or freedom of expression.

The document indicates that there have already been cases where some people have been “unfairly treated” for the use of artificial intelligence, for example, denying them social security benefits or being arrested as a result of errors in facial recognition systems.

“The data that feed and guide AI systems can be deficient, discriminatory, outdated or irrelevant,” the document concludes.

Finally, the report warns that these systems “can lead to discriminatory decision-making, an even greater risk in groups that are already marginalized.”
