Before Ómicron’s arrival in Panama, Minsa asks to avoid massive events and redouble biosafety

Before the appearance of the Omicron variant in the country, the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco, Sucre reiterated the call to the population to redouble biosecurity measures, mainly the use of a mask, physical distancing and frequent hand washing. At the same time avoid crowded activities where there are no controls.

At a press conference, the Minister of Health confirmed that lThe variant was detected in a foreign citizen, whose immigration status is that of a resident foreigner in the country, 50 years old, who arrived in the country, last December 8, with a recent trip to South Africa, to work on a mining project under development.

The Minister explained that due to the epidemiological, genomic and traceability surveillance carried out by the National Government Through an inter-institutional team headed by the Minsa, the presence in the national territory of the new variant of the coronavirus called by the World Health Organization (WHO), Ómicron, was detected.

He detailed that the citizen, entered with a complete vaccination schedule against Covid-19 and a negative antigen test due to coronavirus and complying with the provisions established in the Biosafety Protocol of the mining company and the sanitary measures for its workers, he was subjected to a quarantine that he proceeded to comply with in a hotel in the province of Coclé.

On the third day (December 11), another COVID-19 antigen test was performed, which was negative, however, it was kept in quarantine, monitoring and evaluation. TOOn the fifth day of his quarantine (December 13), he had an antigen test and a PCR test that were positive for Covid-19 and was immediately placed in isolation, in an individual module inside the Mine.

Within the laboratory surveillance, all samples were sent to the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies to determine sequencing and genomic analysis, which it finally resulted in the presence of the Omicron variant, on December 19.
