In the midst of discrepancies about the increase in defense spending announced by Pedro Sánchez, which is rejected by United We Can, including the second vice president and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, Belarra has decided to make public his initiatives for a “social and green shield”. ” without waiting to agree on them with Díaz herself –although she has communicated them, according to Belarra’s entourage– and the rest of the confederal space ministers who held a meeting this Tuesday precisely to coordinate their position on the war, and who are “finalizing” a document that “agrees” on the common position of all those ministers regarding the situation in Ukraine.

According to sources from Belarra’s team, the leader of Podemos considers “it is essential that the Government launch a new social and green shield as soon as possible that guarantees the protection of the population against the generalized rise in prices caused by the international crisis” .

In the minister’s opinion, the issues that must be addressed are “the cost of energy, which has reached a historical record in recent days”, the “support of public services, which now more than ever must function to provide guarantees and certainties in a climate of extreme volatility”, and “social protection policies that guarantee a minimum income and a roof over their heads for everyone”.

Put an end to “the benefits fallen from the sky”

Belarra sent throughout Tuesday and include the repeal of the eighth additional provision of Royal Decree-Law 23/2021, of October 26, which “has allowed power companies to hide the benefits that fell from the sky, thus avoiding their arrival at the public coffers”, the entry into force in April of the Bill that acts on the remuneration of CO2 not emitted in the electricity market, “to reduce the benefits that fell from the sky associated with the price of CO2”, the start-up of an energy check of 300 euros for families that was already announced last Friday or the extension of the social bonus “to increase the beneficiaries and regulation of the precautionary principle to stop the cuts to people in a situation of vulnerability”.

In terms of housing, Belarra proposes the “freezing of the update of rental income during 2022” or the “extension of the anti-eviction decree, including the extension of rents, while this situation lasts.” Social Rights also wants to “simplify” requirements and bureaucratic obstacles to facilitate access to the minimum vital income and the increase in the amount of the benefit (by 18% in the case of a single person) and the access income thresholds. Likewise, it contemplates a reduction of the minimum age of access to the IMV from 23 years to 20“.
