Boston Dynamics takes a stand against war robots | Digital Trends Spanish

One of the great forerunners of robots in recent years is Boston Dynamics, which has excelled with its models that can move with great ease. However, there is one thing they are not programmed for: violence.

For this reason, this Thursday, October 6, they sent a letter with several other companies in the sector, to criticize war robots and those that use weapons.

Signed by Boston Dynamics, Agility, ANYbotics, Clearpath Robotics, Open Robotics, the letter notes, in part,

We believe that adding weapons to robots that are remotely or autonomously operated, widely available to the public, and capable of navigating to previously inaccessible places where people live and work, raises new risks of harm and serious ethical issues. Weaponized applications of these newly trained robots will also damage public trust in the technology in ways that will damage the tremendous benefits it will bring to society.

Today’s open letter finds the signatories pledging not to weaponize their systems, while asking lawmakers to “work with us to promote the safe use of these robots and prohibit their misuse. We also call on every organization, developer, researcher, and user in the robotics community to make similar pledges not to build, license, support, or allow weapons to be attached to such robots.”
