Business associations report a growing number of company closures due to an increase in COVID-19 infections

The increase in the number of coronavirus infections (COVID-19) registered in recent weeks has once again begun to negatively impact the country’s economic activities, due to the fact that a growing number of shops and businesses of all kinds are being forced to close their operations due to lack of staff.

The president of the Panamanian Association of Business Executives (Ape), Elisa Suarez de Gomez, He indicated that many companies have temporarily closed without the need for restrictive measures by the Government, because many of their collaborators have been infected with COVID-19 and others have had to quarantine for having been in direct contact with those people.

In this situation Suarez de Gomez He called on citizens to continue applying biosecurity measures, in order to avoid more contagions and more company closures, in order to prevent this situation from resulting in job losses.

Gentlemen, take care of yourselves, take care of your family, be responsible… the more people get sick, the percentage of the most vulnerable population may be affected”, he pointed out.

These down periods in companies directly impact business productivity, which will be reflected in the economic performance of the country in the first quarter of 2022.

For its part, to keep a more accurate record of the impact of the increase in COVID-19 cases on companies, the National Council of Private Enterprisea (Conep) called on its affiliated unions to report how many workers are infected and how many companies were forced to close or go to telework.
