Can a drone save your life in cardiac arrest? | Digital Trends Spanish

Drones are becoming more and more useful. Some time ago they stopped being a device that entertained aviation fans and now they can be of help in different areas.

Now, according to a study carried out in Sweden, these unmanned aircraft can be very useful in emergency situations.

According to research from the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, drones have a much faster response capacity than a traditional ambulance.

Researchers have studied whether drones can be used to deliver defibrillators to victims and their companions before ambulances arrive.

The scientists even conducted a clinical trial equipping three drones with an automated external defibrillator (AED) in controlled airspace in Sweden, in the city of Gothenburg.

When an emergency call was made to the 112 number due to cardiac arrest, the emergency unit also warned the drone pilots and they went to the scene.

“The drones delivered an automated external defibrillator (AED) right to the doors of the victims’ homes in the first minutes of a cardiac arrest,” explains Dr. Sofia Schierbeck, author of the study.

“The drone arrived almost two minutes faster than the ambulance. And, as drone technology improves, it should be possible to increase patient numbers and time benefits. ”

These tests were carried out for 14 cases in 12 alerts, with an average distance of 3.1 km.

In 11 cases, 92 percent, the device managed to deliver the defibrillator successfully. Thus, the drones with the DEA arrived before the ambulance in 64 percent of the warnings.

“Our study shows that not only is it possible, but it can be faster than an ambulance. This is the first proof of concept and the starting point for the use of drones in emergency medicine around the world ”.
