Review: Is the Iberia Visa Signature card the best credit card for you?

Before we dive into the new welcome offer available on the Iberia Visa Signature® Card (as well as the British Airways Visa Signature® Card and Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Card) it’s important to answer one simple question: What exactly are Avios?

While you might know them as the frequent flyer currency of major Oneworld airline British Airways, Avios are also used by some of BA’s sister airlines like Iberia and Aer Lingus. Each airline has a slightly different flavor of Avios for its particular loyalty program, but you can transfer your Avios from one program to another. This gives you more flexibility when it comes time to redeem, but it means you need to learn the pros and cons of three separate programs to get the most bang for your buck.

It’s not unusual for these three cards to offer welcome bonuses of 100,000 Avios, but what makes this offer special is the lower spending requirement. Now, you’ll earn 100,000 Avios after you spend $5,000 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. You’ll also enjoy elevated bonus categories for your first 12 months of card membership: 5x Avios on eligible flights (3x thereafter), 3x Avios on hotels booked directly with the hotel (2x after), and you’ll continue to earn 1 Avios per dollar spent on all other purchases.

The Iberia Visa Signature® Card comes with a $95 annual fee and does not charge any foreign transaction fees. You can get a 10% discount on flights when you use your card to book at iberia.com/Chase10, and you can also get a $1,000 airfare discount voucher each year you spend $30,000 or more on your card, though the voucher is only valid when you book two tickets on the same flight.

It’s important to note that this card is restricted by Chase’s 5/24 rule, meaning you won’t be approved if you’ve opened five or more credit cards in the last 24 months across all issuers (most small-business cards don’t count towards this total).

This means that you need to seriously consider not only whether this is a good offer, but whether earning Avios is the best option for your points and miles strategy.

If you prefer earning flexible points but still want the ability to use Avios, you could consider opening a card that earns transferable Chase Ultimate Rewards points, because all three of these airlines are Chase transfer partners. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is currently offering a record-high bonus of 100,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening — and with this card, you’ll have more options for redeeming rewards.

How to use Iberia Avios points

While the Avios you earn with this card will be linked to your Iberia Plus frequent flyer account, it’s worth remembering that you can transfer them to British Airways or Aer Lingus Avios, though you’ll rarely if ever want to use the latter option.

British Airways Avios is the best program for most people to use most of the time, though it does come with some notable downsides (like egregiously high taxes on many award tickets to, from, and through London).

Both of these Avios programs use distance-based award charts, meaning that flights from New York to Madrid will be cheaper than those originating in Los Angeles. This is notably different from the major US airlines, and it can take some time to wrap your head around.

If you’re wondering how many Avios you’ll need for a specific flight, you can always check Iberia’s mileage calculator at this link. The important takeaway is that Avios tend to be better for short or medium-haul flights.

Since moving to Miami, one of my favorite uses of Avios has been to book American Airlines flights to the Caribbean. As long as the flight is under 1,151 miles in distance, you’ll pay just 9,000 Avios each way, which is an absolute steal. This is also a great way for me to get home to see my family in DC for free.

You can use Avios to book award tickets with any Oneworld airline, though you may want to price compare between Iberia Plus and British Airways Executive Club before booking. If you opted for the Iberia card over the British Airways version because you frequently travel to Spain, then make sure to pay attention to the award rates for Iberia-operated flights between the US and Madrid, with connections to other European destinations.

The award calendar is split up into peak and off-peak dates, with off-peak economy awards from the US East Coast starting as low as 17,000 Avios each way. In business class, expect to pay just 34,000 Avios for those same shorter off-peak flights, but even under peak dates pricing tops out at a very reasonable 62,500 Avios from the West Coast.

    Benefits and features

Most of the benefits you’ll find on the Iberia Visa Signature® Card are specific to travel on Iberia airlines, but they’re quite different from the garden variety “free checked bag and priority boarding” that come with most US airline cards.

Here are a few of the highlights:

    10% Iberia flight discount

One of the easiest ways to offset the card’s $95 annual fee is by taking advantage of the 10% flight discount, available when you book through iberia.com/Chase10 and pay with your Iberia card. Even if you don’t fly Iberia frequently, using this benefit just once a year may be enough to fully recoup the fee.

    $1,000 travel voucher

If you spend $30,000 or more a year on your Iberia Visa Signature® Card, you’ll earn a $1,000 travel voucher in return. This voucher is only valid when purchasing two tickets on the same Iberia flight, so it really works out to a discount of $500 per person.

If you’re able to earn and redeem this voucher consistently, it amounts to an extra 3.3% back on your first $30,000 of spending each year, making the Iberia Visa Signature® Card a much more compelling option in terms of its earn rate.

    Baggage delay insurance

If your luggage is delayed for six hours or more, you could be reimbursed for essential purchases (like clothing and toiletries) up to $100 per day for up to three days.

    Purchase protection

If you purchased an eligible item with the Iberia Visa Signature® Card and it gets damaged or stolen within 120 days of purchase, you could be eligible for up to $500 in reimbursement per claim, and up to $50,000 per account.

    Extended warranty

The Iberia Visa Signature® Card adds an additional year to most warranties of three years or less. Coverage is up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account.

    Visa Signature benefits

As a Visa Signature card, the Iberia Visa Signature® Card offers access to the Visa Signature Concierge for help with things like hard-to-get restaurant reservations or theater tickets. It doesn’t cost anything to use the service, but any third-party costs are your responsibility.

    Fees and costs

The $95 annual fee on the Iberia Visa Signature® Card is fairly reasonable, especially once you factor in the 100,000-Avios welcome bonus. The card has no foreign transaction fees, making it a solid choice to take on the road with you.

Like most other cards, there are fees for balance transfers, late payments, returned payments, and cash advances.
