China reports first death from monkey B virus | Digital Trends Spanish

If there is one thing we have learned this past year, it is to pay attention to viruses that can be transmitted to humans by animals.

Everything indicates that China (again) has something to say about it. In recent days, the Asian nation reported the first death of a person from the monkey B virus.

It is a rare infectious disease of primates that in people reaches a mortality that can be around 80 percent.

The victim is a 53-year-old vet living in Beijing who ended up becoming the first documented case of the monkey B virus.

The professional worked in a research institute specialized in the breeding of these animals, according to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The vet reportedly dissected two monkeys that died in March and began to feel the first symptoms in April, consisting of nausea, vomiting and fever.

The victim passed away on May 27, and his blood and saliva samples were analyzed in April.

This virus is also known as herpes virus B and is prevalent among macaque monkeys. It tends to attack the central nervous system and causes inflammation in the brain.

This leads to loss of consciousness and if it is not treated in time, it reaches a high mortality rate.

The first case of this virus dates back to 1932 and, since then, fewer than 100 infections have been reported, none of them fatal so far.
