The event, which started on February 3 and ends on February 12 with the grand final, is held entirely in the United Arab Emirates.

Who and how is the Club World Cup played?

The Club World Cup brings together the champion teams from each of the six FIFA-affiliated confederations, plus a representative from the country organizing the event.

For the 2022 edition, the tournament considers the following teams:

  • Chelsea from England: champion of the UEFA Champions League 2020-21.
  • Palm trees from Brazil: champion of the Copa Libertadores 2021.
    Monterey of Mexico: 2021 Concacaf Champions League Champion.
    Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia: 2021 Asian Champions League Champion.
  • Al-Ahly of Egypt: champion of the African Champions League 2020-21.
  • Pirate of Haiti: nominated by the Confederation of Oceania.
  • Al-Jazeera from the United Arab Emirates: organizer and champion of the Arab League of the Gulf 2020-21.

Although it has had multiple variations since its first edition in 2000, since 2007 it has adopted the current format, which consists of a single-match, single-elimination tournament:

  • First stage: It faces the club of the organizing country and the representative of Oceania in a match.
  • Second stage: pairings between clubs from Concacaf, Africa, Asia and the winner of the first round.
  • Semifinals: second phase winners face representatives of UEFA and Conmebol.
  • Final: semifinal winners.

One of the main novelties of the event will be the debut of the limb tracking, a semi-automatic system to detect offside.
