The level of confidence of Chinese citizens in their Government reached 91%, while this rate among Americans is only 39%, the barometer of
edelman trust 2022.
This survey is the 22nd annual to focus on trust and credibility. It is made by the world’s largest global public relations consulting firm, and was released on Tuesday.
Powered by Edelman Data & Intelligence and through e30-minute online interviews conducted from November 1 to 24 of last year, this survey is based on 36,000 respondents from 28 countries.
The confidence index of Chinese citizens increased, while that of the
Americans decreased in all four categories covered by the barometer: businesses,
non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Government and media.
The confidence index of the Chinese increased 11 points, up to 83, while that of the Americans dropped 5 points to 43.
Focusing on China, Edelman’s report cited various internal and external factors to explain why popular support was so high last year.
According to the analysis, China was the first major economy to reopen and recover after the outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19). It was the only relevant economy to see growth in 2020 and that momentum continued through most of 2021.
What’s more, the Chinese government made progress in other areas in 2021, such as the fight against
pollution and its anti-corruption campaign, according to the report.
