Diana Riba: “We can’t continue next to people who spy on us”

The scandal of the wiretapping of the Catalan independence movement has confronted the government’s partners and endangers its stability and the Economic Plan against the crisis due to the war in Ukraine. To maintain their support, the independentistas demand from the government a commission to investigate who is behind the espionage. Some listening that we know thanks to the Canadian organization Citizen Lab, which published a list of up to 65 people spied on with the malicious Pegasus software. All of them related to the Catalan independence movement. A list in which some lawyers of defendants, activists, couples and relatives of politicians also appear. This happened between 2018 and 2020. Already far from October 1, 2017 and the Catalan referendum. The organization that has uncovered the Catalan Gate case and published by the New Yorker warns that the list is very likely to be broader.

The Catalan Parliament has approved taking the case to court. We spoke with Diana Riba, vice president of the Pegasus commission in the Parlament that appears among those spied on at the Catalan Gate. She has called for the resignation of Minister Margarita Robles and in relation to relations with the Government, she assures that “We cannot continue to be on the side of people who spy on us and continue to take us to court.”

We analyze the edges of State espionage and the role of the CNI, of Pegasus and the wiretapping of pro-independence politicians and we ask ourselves how the State sewers continue to function with Neus Tomasdeputy director of eldiario.es and head of the delegation of Catalonia, Joseph M. Ganyetcomputer engineer, technological disseminator, Catalan activist spied on and Anthony Rubiopresident of the Association of Investigative Journalists.
