For fans of trivia and who want to procrastinate on the internet for a while, a map creator in Mapbox has an application that allows you to know who is the most famous person in your hometown.
Topi Tjukanov’s project uses a cross-checked database of notable people to show the birthplaces of public figures. The developer modified the data to only show one person from each unique geographic location with the highest notoriety rank, meaning that if there is more than one famous person from a particular city, it will only show the most well-known person.
Did you know Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar and Barack Obama in Honolulu? Who is the most famous person from your hometown?
I made a map of the most notable people around the world. Built with @Mapbox.

In the study, researchers from the University of Paris set out to calculate a person’s notoriety based on information pulled from Wikipedia and Wikidata.
“A new line of literature aims to build the most comprehensive and accurate database of remarkable individuals,” the research team, led by Morgane Laouénan, wrote.
“We collected a large amount of data from various editions of Wikipedia and Wikidata.”
The data takes into account a number of factors, including the number of Wikipedia entries, the length of the entries, the average number of visits for each person from 2015-2018, and the total number of external links.
