A group of Egyptian researchers announced the discovery of a new species of whale after the discovery of a fossil in the Western desert of Egypt.

According to the researchers, this specimen swam and walked 43 million years ago thanks to its four legs. It was a fearsome predator three meters long, capable of easily biting its prey both on land and in water.

Paleontologists made this finding in the Fayoum depression in 2008. They found the skull, teeth, jaw, vertebrae and ribs of this true “walking whale,” and estimate that it would have weighed at least 600 kilograms.

“It was an active and successful predator. I think he was the god of death for most of the animals that lived next to him. We discovered how their fierce, deadly and powerful jaws were capable of ripping through a wide range of prey, ”explained Abdullah Gohar, lead author of the study.

While this is not the first time the fossil of a legged whale has been found, Phiomycetus anubis it could be the first type of semi-aquatic whale discovered in Africa.

“Phiomicetus anubis is a new species of whale that constitutes a critical discovery for Egyptian and African paleontology,” adds the scientist.
