Donald Trump and first lady Melania test positive for coronavirus

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this morning that he and his wife, Melania Trump, have tested positive for coronavirus.

“Tonight, the first lady and I have tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. Together we will overcome it!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Hours before, it had emerged that the US president had initiated the quarantine with Melania Trump after learning the positive from one of his closest advisers, Hope Hicks. Hicks, 31, traveled several times this week aboard Air Force One with Trump, the last Wednesday to Minnesota, where the president had a campaign rally. They also traveled together Tuesday to Cleveland, Ohio for the presidential debate and on Saturday to Pennsylvania for another rally.

US media reported that the adviser experienced symptoms of coronavirus on the flight back to Washington from Minnesota, was quarantined on the presidential plane and this Thursday her positive for COVID-19 was confirmed. Hicks was seen without a mask at various times during these trips, as was Trump.
