Economy rejects Díaz’s proposal to limit the price of food and advocates letting competition work

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation has rejected the proposal of the Second Vice President and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, to set a shopping basket for basic products with “frozen” or limited prices.

Yolanda Díaz: “I want an agreement with the distributors to cap the prices of basic foods such as bread, milk or eggs”

According to sources from the Ministry headed by Nadia Calviño, competition in the market should be left to work instead of agreeing with large distributors to set prices for basic products in the shopping basket. They emphasize that the important thing is not to agree, but that the competition works.

From the Department headed by Nadia Calviño they have stressed that the important thing is that the margins of the companies remain stable and that competition works so that, through greater stability in the costs that are being perceived, inflation can fall.

Thus, faced with the proposal launched by Yolanda Díaz, from the Ministry of Economy they advocate not contributing to the current complex scenario with decisions that may seem to make sense in the short term, but that in the medium and long term harm the company and the economy.

Just this Thursday, Yolanda Díaz has stated, after her meeting with the executive director of Carrefour Spain, that the shopping basket of basic products with “frozen” or “limited” prices that she is demanding from large distribution must vary every week, include protein and fresh (fish, meat, fruit, eggs and vegetables), products for celiacs and be available to families at least until after Christmas.

Reproaches of Robles

It has not been the only criticism that the second vice president has received this Thursday from her government colleagues. The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has reproached Díaz this Thursday for “not respecting” the powers of the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, with his proposal and that, in addition, “he wants to patrimonialize” being with the most vulnerable.

“When you are in a collegiate body, you can have particular opinions, but there are ministers who are the competent ones, who are the ones who technically know everything and are the ones who have to make the decisions”, the minister transferred in an interview on Antena 3 , collected by Europa Press, asked for an assessment of Díaz’s meeting with large distributors and consumer and user associations to try to find an agreement that caps the prices of basic foods.

Robles has criticized that the head of Labor “wants to enter something that does not correspond to her” and, although she does not doubt that all the ministers make their proposals with the best will, she has reminded her that behind the proposals there are “technical aspects and economics that must be known”.

In addition, the socialist minister has censured that “someone wants to patrimonialize that he is with the most vulnerable.” “We are all with those who need it most”, she has reproached him. In this sense, she has praised the work of Planas at the head of the Ministry of Agriculture and has recalled that the Government must work together and respect “everyone’s powers as much as possible”.
