Lucasfilm’s first major Star Wars series of the year recently finished airing in the form of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but what could be one of the series of Disney Plus more ambitious of the study is just around the corner. Andor is (another) prequel story set during the era of the Galactic Empire and the Rebellion, this time centering on Diego Luna’s spy character Cassian Andor from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
It will detail his life as well as a new supporting cast in the years leading up to the events of rogue one, but its season structure is what could be so ambitious about it. In addition to boasting stronger VFX than what Disney+ recently released, Andor It has essentially been charted as a 24-episode series spread evenly over two seasons. It’s kind of refreshing to see that a big-budget franchise show has a clear vision in mind from behind the scenes, and these are the things that are worth in-universe before going into its premiere.
As well as The Mandalorian managed to mix science fiction with the western genre, Andor is touted as a Star Wars-themed spy thriller that takes place five years before by Rogue One and, by extension, Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
It appears to be grittier than we might be used to seeing, or at least around the similar tone of The Mandalorian. That grounded atmosphere could make the more intimate character-driven narrative, with Andor opening during the early days of the Rebellion as they attempt to build momentum for what the original star wars trilogy it expanded.
But while the first season will start five years earlier that rogue one Y A New Hope, it will specifically cover only one year of canon. That leaves the final 12 episodes of the series in the upcoming season 2 to span the remaining four years. According to showrunner Tony Gilroy in an interview with TotalFilmseason 2 will be divided into four blocks of three episodes, each block will move the timeline one year until it feeds to Rogue One.
Star Wars is one of several major media franchises with daunting layers of lore, but the series’ structure of Andor It seems like an interesting way to make it easy for audiences to see what is essentially a prequel within a prequel.
Who is Cassian Andor?
Focusing on the protagonist, Cassian Andor is a much newer addition to the larger Star Wars canon considering the franchise’s 45-year history. And while the state of the franchise post-acquisition has been rocky quality-wise due to the disjointed sequel trilogy, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story by Gareth Edwards has retroactively been seen as the strongest of the Disney-era bunch, and was largely defined by the original characters.
Diego Luna’s rogue spy was one of several team members who complemented Felicity Jones’s born-again freedom fighter Jyn Erso and stood out as a featured artist despite the fact that the film itself shed little light. about his backstory. Cassian lost his father to the Empire and, with one of the few things learned about his origins in rogue oneenlisted in Rebellion at just six years old as a thief turned spy and assassin.
Given the Andor it’s a prequel of a prequel, just keeping up with the movies will let the audience know that Cassian’s fate ends in tragedy and great sacrifice alongside his comrades at the end of rogue one. The end of that film takes place a few minutes before the beginning of A new hopewhere Princess Leia Organa is kidnapped for obtaining the Death Star schematics, which Cassian Andor and Jyn Erso died to steal for the Rebellion on the Empire-occupied planet of Scarif.
rogue one he did well to raise the stakes on a result that most of us already know feels downright genuine. Part of that was achieved thanks to the more serious and grounded tone as a Star Wars-themed heist-war epic, with the final act ratcheting up the tension and sense of loss, and the sense of dread reaching a fever pitch.
However, one of the criticisms of the film was how having such a large cast of characters for a single film prevented any one of them from being explored too much outside of Jyn Erso. Andor will feature a similarly grown Cassian as the series picks up just half a decade before his sacrifice, but fans can probably expect to be fed pieces of the battle-hardened rogue spy’s origins via flashback sequences.
and although rogue one was more of a war epic, while Andor will lean towards the espionage side of the Galactic Civil War, fans are likely to be sure to expect a similar level of grit to the storytelling, as those who previewed the special series at the end of the recent theatrical relaunch should know. of rogue one. Audiences should see a healthy dose of political intrigue as Senator Mon Mothma returns to deal with the dark machinations of Imperial politics while he secretly aids the Rebellion.
Andor you’ll certainly play in a familiar sandbox in terms of timeline and setting, but all of these creative elements going into the series should allow you to forge something refreshing within that familiarity.
lucasfilm Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is available to stream now on Disney+, and Andor will have a three-episode series premiere on September 21, with the remaining nine episodes of the season streaming weekly.
