The new restrictions in Extremadura to stop the fifth wave of the covid are accompanied by new criteria to implement them that have to do with the population, incidence and healthcare pressure of each of the eight health areas.
The Governing Council of the Board has met this Friday in an extraordinary way to decide what measures to implement and lowered what criteria. Taking general measures for the entire autonomous community has been ruled out, at least for the moment, and the current strategy will be followed: acting only in the municipalities with the worst epidemiological situation. But the perimeter closures are now joined by the curfew.
The Minister of Health, José María Vergeles, explained that in localities with less than 1,500 inhabitants, the situation will be addressed directly by the health areas to which they belong, regardless of the incidence – having a small population, any contagion increases this indicator in a striking way- and of their hospital occupation.
In municipalities between 1,500 inhabitants and up to 15,000 with a cumulative incidence of more than 500 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants after 14 days, the Junta de Extremadura will propose the perimeter closure. If, in addition, the occupation of hospital beds in the health area is greater than 2% in the plant or 10% in the ICU, the confinement will be accompanied by a curfew from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. These measures will be in effect for two weeks but will be reviewed weekly.
As for Extremadura populations of 15,000 or more inhabitants, the perimeter closure is ruled out because “there is no evidence” of its effectiveness, Vergeles has admitted. Therefore, if the incidence exceeds 500 cases, “the principle of responsibility will be acted upon,” that is, with greater police surveillance and reminding the population of compliance with health measures.
In the event that hospital occupancy begins to show a worsening of cases (more than 2% of beds in the ward and 10% in the ICU), Health will propose to the Superior Court of Justice of Extremadura (TSJEx) the limitation of mobility night from 1 in the morning until 6 in the morning.
The restrictions approved in the Governing Council have already been requested to the courts for several populations in the region, the Minister of Health has informed.
The Board has requested authorization for the perimeter closure of Trujillo (9,012 inhabitants), which has an incidence of 754 cases after 14 days, Jaraíz de la Vera (6,478 inhabitants) and with 725 cases after two weeks and Montehermoso (5,739 inhabitants) , and a 14-day rate of 940.
But in the case of Jaraíz de la Vera and Montehermoso, the curfew will also apply because hospital occupancy in the health area to which they belong is 2.38% of beds in the ward and 16% in ICUs.
The city of Plasencia (39,913 inhabitants) has the same occupancy figures (all belong to the same health area) and an incidence of 531 cases, but being greater than 15,000 inhabitants, the measure that will be adopted will be the limitation of night mobility.
The Minister of Health has clarified that the curfew will not affect for the moment the ten Extremadura towns that are already perimeter and that, in addition, are having a favorable evolution of their health situation.
