Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91. The Franco-Swiss director, standard bearer of the Nouvelle Vaguedirected titles as emblematic as At the end of the escapade, Pierrot the madman and Alphaville. His relatives have confirmed the news to the French media Libération.
The director was born in Switzerland on December 3, 1930, but it was after moving to Paris as a teenager that his love for the seventh art was born, thanks to his frequent visits to the French Cinematheque. All this while he was studying ethnology at the Sorbonne.
Later, in 1950, he began working as a film critic for various magazines, including Cahiers du Cinéma, where he met François Truffaut, Éric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol and Jacques Rivette.
The publication was the germ of what would end up becoming one of the most important movements in the history of cinema, the new wave.
