God of War Ragnorok: The best skills in the game | Digital Trends Spanish

Even with his bare hands, Kartos is a force to be reckoned with. However, starting in god of war ragnarok, is far from unarmed. Picking up where the last game left off, Kratos retains his trusty Leviathan Axe, as well as his old Blades of Chaos, to hack, slash, and smash any god or monster that threatens him or his child. For some reason, however, he has lost all the skills with those weapons that he picked up in his first Norse adventure.

Starting essentially from scratch, the skill trees in god of war ragnarok they will seem familiar to players of the first game or really any similar RPG. Skills are divided based on weapon or character, and then further divided based on what type of skill they are. XP comes slow, especially in the early game, so knowing which abilities will be the most useful is vital. Before you go to fight Thor or Odin, check out the best skills to unlock in god of war ragnarok.

Note: There will be minor spoilers about what the abilities do. We will not screw up any abilities associated with anything that is not known about God of War Ragnarok.

The best skills in God of War Ragnarok

We’ll give some examples of the best abilities for each of his three main skill trees: the Leviathan Axe, the Blades of Chaos, and Atreus.

frozen ascent

An easy ability to incorporate into your combat flow is Frozen Ascent. This ability improves the damage of your normal R2 attack while your ax is imbued with Frost Awaken, which is activated by holding Triangle. Once icy-polished, Frozen Ascent will launch the enemy upwards in a burst of ice dealing high damage, as well as a large chunk of frost to the target. Once airborne, you’re free to juggle them into oblivion.

extinguish flames

For an ax skill you don’t even need to think about, Extinguish Flames is an easy pick. This is just a passive damage increase to all your Leviathan ax attacks against enemies that are afflicted by burning. It’s a bit more situational, but if you’re a graceful fighter who enjoys swapping weapons mid-battle, this is a great option to maximize your damage automatically.

perm frost

Similar to Extinguish Flames, Perma Frost is another ability you can buy and not worry about. This time the ability will cause your ax to stack up and eventually start dealing frost damage with each hit, as long as you can land enough hits without taking damage yourself. Just make sure to keep your dodges and parries on point to allow the ability to activate, otherwise it will be a waste.

Hyperion Grapple II

Moving on to Blades of Chaos, Hyperion Grapple II is well worth the investment. This is the enhanced form of the ability, hence II, which initially has Kratos throwing his blades at an enemy and then pulling himself back at them to follow up with close range combos. This version still does all of that, only now it also deals a ton of stun damage and creates an AoE of fire sparks behind the enemy to hit anyone else unlucky enough to be there.

chaos plume

This ability will take a while before you can buy it, as you need to upgrade your blades to at least level four, but it should be the first thing you buy once you do. This move is a callback to the old God of War games and is essentially one of those old combos ripped off and placed on god of war ragnarok. If you input five light attacks (R1) followed by a heavy finisher (R2), Kratos will do a sweep combo that ends with him slamming his blades into the ground and creating an explosion that deals AoE burn damage.

watchful guard

Atreus’ abilities can seem lackluster, mainly because you can’t directly control most of them. That said, the more abilities you give him, the more often you’ll notice Atreus helping out more than typical in skirmishes. Watchful Protector is one you’ll want early on, as it makes Atreus turn the enemy’s attention away from you and look at him whenever you’re low on HP and pressured. This can give you that precious time to find some HP or just compose yourself.

sonic power

The first type of arrow Atreus gets are Sonic Arrows. When he hits enemies with them, they can create a small sonic blast that deals stun damage, which is great for breaking up any tight group. Sonic Potency only improves these arrows by increasing the blast range and damage dealt.

bash violation

You’ll notice that many of the abilities Atreus can gain are related to stunning. Even though he wields a bow, he will end up fighting in relatively close quarters most of the time, meaning these abilities are more useful than they might initially seem. Of all of them, we like Breaching Bash the most. When he fires, Atreus will do a shield bash, similar to the same move you can do by tappingL1twice and dealing high stun damage. Atreus is all about stun, so why not equip him with moves to get the most stun automatically?
