The heavy downpours registered in the south of the province of Tarragona, especially in the Montsià region, have caused significant flooding in several localities, have made it necessary to cut roads and rescue vehicles. The Civil Protection of the Generalitat does not rule out at this time that people may have been trapped in some of them. The most affected towns are Sant Carles de la Rápita, Ulldecona and Alcanar. In the latter, 77.7 liters per square meter have been accumulated in just 30 minutes.
The intensity of the rains that have fallen in the morning and at noon have forced to cut several roads: the N-340 between Amposta and Alcanar, the AP-7 in Ulldecona towards Tarragona and the TP -3318 in Ulldecona. Civil Protection has called on the population of the Montsià and Baix Ebre regions to avoid mobility until 3 pm.
The deputy director of Civil Protection, Sergio Delgado, explained that more than a hundred notices have been received at 112 and that above all they are for the rescue of vehicles, which entails the possibility that there are people trapped. At 2:00 p.m., 212 liters had fallen in Alcanar. Delgado has called for caution in the face of a “very exceptional” situation in which the water is taking the cars.
The Minister of the Interior of the Generalitat, Joan Ignasi Elena, presides at 2:00 p.m. the meeting of the INUNCAT technical committee due to the incidents derived from the rains. The Alcanar City Council has also called for citizens not to leave home, since mobility is now high risk. In addition, there are about 5,500 users without electricity in this area due to the strong storms, as reported by Civil Protection.
Firefighters have received between 12 and 13 hours 126 flood warnings, especially in Alcanar, with 96 calls.
