Home coffee roasters: a nice utensil for mocha lovers

Coffee lovers often appreciate its smallest details: the boil, the pot in which it is made, and even the most refined palates can distinguish the roast of the grain. Although many of us buy coffee already ground or whole beans, there are some people who prefer to do the whole process and, in this way, make “our own coffee”. And that can include roasting.

There are some small appliances that allow us to roast the grains to our liking: coffee roasters. These are tools that open the door to making the complete process of the product except its own collection, since this is the first step before making the drink or boiling it.

First things first: why is coffee roasted? The roast is heating the green coffee bean so that it loses its moisture, increase the size and adopt the typical color and texture of the already prepared grain. Depending on the time and the process, we can obtain different types of aromas and tastes.

In this way, it is possible to distinguish between the following types of roasting that vary especially by the roasting time, which ranges between 12 and 25 minutes:

  • Light roast (light, medium light): It contributes little aroma to the grain and gives it acidity. It does not develop taste or bitterness.
  • Medium Roast: very intense aromas and loss of acid nuances. Bitter and full-bodied.
  • Dark roast (high, very high): aroma burnt or without aroma, in addition to losing acidity. An outstanding bitter taste and even a burnt aftertaste.

Now, how do you roast coffee? These machines emit hot air to prevent the grains from burning and, above all, so that the roasting is uniform and, although the process is simple, the following must be known:

  • Drying: the green coffee bean is introduced in the drum with a high temperature, but not maximum. In this step, the grain will increase in size and take on a light brown color -similar to cinnamon-.
  • Toasted: the temperature is increased by 20 degrees so that the roasting begins, which will begin to release odours. After a while, the temperature can be raised to 200 or 250ºC depending on the result we want to obtain.
  • Cooled: once it is toasted, it must be cooled either with cold water or with cold air.

Before buying a coffee roaster, you also need green beans. That is, “raw” grains. These can be found on Amazon –like this nicaragua– or at some local coffee shops. Keep in mind that, on several occasions, the price is higher than that of already ground coffee.

As of now, we collect some models of coffee roasters that you can buy through Amazon:

YUCHENGTECH electric roaster

With a capacity of up to 800 grams of coffee, this electric roaster is a tool that does the work for us. This model has an inclination of 45 degrees so that the coffee is distributed in a better way and avoid white or raw spaces.

It allows to regulate both the type of roasting (light or deep) and the temperature through a button, so that we can change it at any time. In addition, according to the manufacturer, this machine also roasts nuts or legumes.

MOKT electric coffee roaster

A model very similar to the previous one: an electric toaster that withstands temperatures of up to 240 degrees and has a heat-insulating coating to prevent us from burning ourselves while using it.

Like the previous one, it can also be used for walnuts, chestnuts, corn…

Banapo Manual Coffee Roaster

However, the previous models can be very expensive tools and it may be that for a whim like this we want to save some money. There are some manual coffee roasters, like this one from Banapo, which save money and also allow a more personalized roasting of the coffee.

This toaster consists of a stainless steel drum where to put the grain and a small flame at the bottom. The coffee is introduced into the drum and it is rotated manually using a crank on the side so that the beans are roasted evenly. In this way, we can control the time, speed and heat of the flame, which is made of alcohol.
