Although WhatsApp already allowed you to hide individual or group conversations, every time one of its members sent a message, you would see it again on the main screen of the application. Thanks to one of the updates that the app from Facebook Inc. received in 2021, now it is possible to avoid it.
How to archive a WhatsApp chat
The first thing is to archive a group or individual WhatsApp chat. To do this, you just need to hold down the conversation and tap the button file, identified with an icon of a box and an arrow, which you will find at the top of the screen.
If you want to take more radical measures, you can also archive all your chats in one go. To do this, in the application menu go to Settings> Chats> Chat History> Archive all chats.
For your peace of mind, you should consider that when you activate the archive function you are not deleting the content of the conversations. Also, none of your contacts will know that you have archived the conversation.
Anyway, keep in mind that archived chats will not be saved in the backups to iCloud (iOS) or Google Drive (Android).
Archived conversations will remain pinned to the top of the tab Chats, inside the label Archived. If you want to review any of them, you just have to press Archived and all the chats that are hidden will be displayed.
To unarchive a conversation, just press and hold it and tap the button Unarchive, identified with an icon of a box and a green arrow, which you will find at the top of the screen.
If you want to change the default settings and prevent chats from being visible again when you receive new messages, there is the possibility to archive them permanently. To do this, you have two alternatives.
- Option 1: in the main menu of WhatsApp, open Settings, press Chats and select the check box Keep chats archived, located under the Archived Chats tab.
- Option 2: in the tab Chats, push the button Archived, then press the menu (three vertical dots) and choose Archiving Settings. On the next screen, check the checkbox Keep chats archivedThe good thing is that you can activate and deactivate this option as many times as you want.
