The 13th version of Apple’s mobile operating system was presented to the world in September 2019, but this, as it usually happens, has already been overtaken by iOS 14 and even by iOS 15. However, if you are going to update an old iOS 12 device, you may have to download it anyway. Here’s how download iOS 13 on iPhone and on the iPod Touch.

Note: For the first time in Apple’s history, the iPad took a path of its own and lost its ties to iOS. IPads didn’t get iOS 13. Instead, they started getting their own operating system, called iPadOS.

Compatible Devices

First, make sure your device is capable of operating with the iOS 13. Although it is well known that Apple gives new software updates to older devices, some older iPhones that were eligible for iOS 12 will no longer receive iOS 13, so don’t assume you will have it just because your device did receive 12. The following iPod Touch and iPhone devices are compatible with iOS 13:

  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE
  • iPod Touch (7th generation)

Unfortunately, this means that if you have an iPhone 6 or earlier, you are stuck on iOS 12.

Technically, the iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max are capable of running iOS 13. However, as these models come with iOS 14 and iOS 15, you will not be able to downgrade them to iOS 13. In the final part of this article we offer you more details about this situation.

With iCloud

Using iCloud is probably the easiest way to back up your device. This is how you do it:

Downloading iOS 14

Apple released iOS 14 in September 2020, as it does every year. In the past, it was possible to downgrade from, say, iOS 12 to iOS 11. If you already have iOS 14 installed and you’re not a fan of the changes, you won’t be able to downgrade to iOS 13. Apple introduced a change in iOS 13 that makes the iPhones can only install Apple-registered versions of iOS. Thus, if you find a version of iOS 13 online, it is likely not authorized by Apple. In other words, there is no way to go back. Here we have a guide to download iOS 14.

Downloading iOS 15

iOS 15, the newest version of iOS, is now available for download. The update process for iOS 15 is almost the same as for iOS 13; here we have a guide to help you download iOS 15.
