How to recover deleted messages on an iPhone | Digital Trends Spanish

The mysterious circumstances of his disappearance do not matter; it is almost always possible to recover deleted messages on an iPhone.

How? The device saves all text message, MMS and iMessage data in a SQLite database, an open source utility back end built into all phones, most computers, and many applications. When you delete a message, the occupied space is transformed from Assigned to Not assigned, while the message data still remains there to be eventually overwritten by new messages that emerge over time. Before the new data overwrites the old, it is possible to recover those messages.

The first thing you should do is stop sending messages until you recover these lost messages.

There are several ways to recover missing messages, depending on how you back up your iPhone: with iCloud or directly on your computer. It is even possible to get them back after a hard factory reset. Some third-party applications can also help under certain conditions. We will walk you through the various ways to recover text messages with iOS 13 and iOS 14 (the process is the same).

Restoring texts from an iCloud backup

If you already have iCloud backup enabled and your iPhone is backing up on schedule, the deleted text messages should be available. The service backs up messages sent via iMessage, SMS, and MMS, but requires the same SIM card as when you backed up.

  • Go to Setting> Name> iCloud> ICloud Backup.
  • Make sure iCloud Backup is enabled.
  • Erase your iPhone by going to Setting> general> Restore.
  • Choose Delete all content and settingsn.
  • You will be asked if you want to restore your iPhone from an iCloud backup.
  • Choose Restore from backup to iCloud.
  • Once the backup is restored, you should be able to access the text messages that were on the phone the first time you backed up.

Restore messages from Mac (macOS 10.15 Catalina)

If you do a backup on your computer, you may already have a number of backups saved. To begin, the first thing is to deactivate Search my Iphone on your phone. Choose Setting>Your name> Search my> Search my Iphone and deactivates the selection. You will be prompted for your Apple ID password to disable Find My iPhone. Then you must do the following:

  • Connect the phone to the computer via USB.
  • Open Finder by double-clicking on the hard drive icon.
  • Find your iPhone under the Locations sidebar and click on it.
  • Click on Manage backups to see all your saved backups and choose which one you want to restore messages from. The backup must be prior to the deletion of the messages.
  • Click on Restore iPhone.

Check with your service provider

If all else fails, contact your ISP as they may be able to store a backup copy of messages sent and received from your phone if they have not yet been overwritten, and if so, they may be accessible. Please contact customer service or technical support for testing, but there is no guarantee that this will work. Try it, in any case, before trying a third-party application.

Restore messages with a third-party app

As a last resort, you can try a number of reputable third-party applications that allow you to recover deleted text messages on your iPhone. Simply connect the iPhone to your computer, launch the application, and follow the on-screen instructions.
