Since the release of the original model, Apple has done nothing but improve its popular headphones. However, despite the progress, there is something that the company has not achieved: prevent you from losing one. The good news is that replace a lost or broken AirPods it’s not complicated – this is what you should do.

Let’s face it: Apple’s wireless headphones aren’t the cheapest, but they might be the best. If you’re not careful, you could spend the same amount on a different brand of headphones that might not work as well. With reliable connectivity and an easy pairing process, it’s easy to see why so many people prefer AirPods.
However, the cordless design makes it easier for you to lose one of the pieces. If you’ve lost or damaged an AirPod or its charging case, here’s what it will cost to replace each component:
- individual AirPods (3rd generation and earlier): $69 USD each
- AirPods charging case: $59 dollars
- AirPods wireless charging case: $79 dollars
- MagSafe charging case: $79 dollars
- Individual AirPods Pro: $89 dollars each
- AirPods Pro Wireless Charging Case: $89 dollars
Step 1: Start by making sure that you are signed in to your Apple account with your correct ID. Then navigate to the support page.
Step 2: once there, select Lost or Misplaced AirPods to open an additional menu screen.
Step 3: On this screen, you can choose to replace a missing AirPod, replace the charging case, or even replace damaged AirPods Pro tips. For now, let’s assume you want to replace a single AirPod.
Step 4: Here you can perform various actions. The place to start is order a replacementBut sometimes AirPods just can’t be replaced. Because of this, a more reliable option may be to select Order a replacement via chat with an advisor, where you can be more specific with what you want. Apple also lets you give Support details for a later call or can give you instructions on how to order an AirPod from an Apple Store.
There is more than one way to purchase a replacement part, but we like the method above because it is very straightforward.
So what if you have all the parts, but something isn’t working right? Fortunately, AirPods and AirPods Pro are covered by a one-year warranty. The service for any of the AirPods with reduced battery life capacity or defective battery in this time frame will be free of charge.
However, fixing battery issues outside of this time frame will cost you $49 for each AirPod with this issue, or $98 for the pair. A replacement charging case will set you back $49.
If you’re the kind of person who values peace of mind, you might want to sign up for AppleCare+, which limits replacement costs and covers some repairs. With an AppleCare+ plan, the replacement costs are as follows:
- AirPods Pro: $29 dollars
- Charging case for AirPods Pro: $29 dollars
- AirPods: $29 dollars
- Charging case for AirPods: $29 dollars
- wireless charging case: $29 dollars
It’s that easy. If your AppleCare+ warranty is still in effect, you’ll get a $29 price drop. When it comes to repairing damaged parts, AppleCare+ covers two cases of accidental damage within a 12-month period. This means that in the standard coverage of two years you will have access to four repairs of damaged AirPods. If one of your AirPods stops working, instead of having to trade it in, you could use your AppleCare+ warranty to get it repaired.
AirPods Pro that were manufactured before October 2020 can develop a couple of different issues that have been considered manufacturing issues. These problems are:
- Crackling and static that seem to be related to noise cancellation, which can even get worse in loud or active environments, or when talking on the phone.
- Active noise cancellation leading to audio issues, such as losing all bass sound or increasing ambient noise instead of blocking it out.
If you’re experiencing these issues, Apple has created a free replacement program for AirPods Pro (but not the case). To take advantage of this program, contact an Authorized Service Provider or an Apple Retail Store and explain that you are interested. It should be noted that the program does not affect any other models and only lasts for two years after the sale of the defective headphones.
One of the best options for replacing Apple devices is to contact Apple Support directly. You’ll need to know the serial number of your AirPods, AirPods Pro, or charging case before you call. You can also contact Apple Support along with the policy Apple Express Replacement in case you need a quick replacement for your AirPod.
To get your new device, contact Apple Support and provide your warranty details. If you are eligible under this policy, the company will send you a replacement. After that, all you need to do is ship your faulty device to Apple within 10 days of shipping your replacement.
Apple support isn’t the only place you can go when looking for an AirPods replacement, especially if you want to save some money. However, it’s hard to know when to trust a third party offering AirPod replacements.
We suggest taking a look at podswap. This company receives and repairs individual AirPods and then exchanges them for malfunctioning models. Trade-in is much more affordable than going through Apple (unless you have AppleCare+). It’s a good idea to start looking early, as stock on Podswap is dependent on donations and can be low at times.
The AirPods Max — Apple’s latest dedicated earbuds — are a single unit, which means replacing or repairing them is simpler. If you have AppleCare+, all AirPods Max repairs will cost you $29.
This should also cover you for replacements, if necessary. You can also choose to only replace the ear tips on your AirPods Max if necessary, which is handy if one of them breaks. If you don’t have AppleCare+, you’ll need to call or chat and ask for replacement prices specific to your region.
However, there is one significant caveat to replacing AirPods Max that are under warranty: by default, new ear tips are not included. This means you have to keep the ear tips from your old headphones or buy/replace new ear tips for your new model.
