Send an email as SMS

Step 1: With the email client of your choice, write an email as you normally would. You can use your phone or your computer to do it.

Step 2: Instead of entering an email address in the recipient box, you should enter the 10-digit phone number of the person you want to contact.

Step 3: After the phone number, add the corresponding domain “@gateway”. Here’s a list of some of the most common service providers in the United States and their respective gateway addresses.

If you want to send an email longer than 160 characters, the multimedia message service (MMS). If the person you are writing to does not have a plan with MMS included, then they will not receive the message or they may be charged a fee to open it. Some operators also offer email for multimedia messages, so if you are sending a message longer than 160 characters, use the MMS gateways detailed in the table above.

Another thing to note is that some companies do not operate their own mobile networks. In the list above, Boost, Cricket Wireless, Republic Wireless, Straight Talk, Ting, and Tracfone are Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). This means that they rely on the cell towers of other operators, depending on where you are in the US. Because of this, you may sometimes have to use Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T gateway addresses instead of your own.

Download an extension for faster SMS

A Chrome extension can help you send more efficient SMS

There is a Chrome extension that is specifically designed to help you send text messages from Gmail. If you use this service and send a large number of emails as text messages, this little extension is a valuable and free download.

The extension is called Send Your Email to SMS (text) and you can use it if you use Chrome as your browser.

This tool simply adds a little phone icon to the Gmail window. Write the email you want to send and then click on the phone icon. This will display your Gmail contact list and allow you to search for the person you want to text. You can also add a new phone number.

Email is automatically formatted as SMS and responses will be delivered to your Gmail account, allowing you to have successful conversations.

If you don’t have Gmail, obviously it is not useful, but for regular users with many contacts, this extension makes sending SMS by email much easier and more efficient, forgetting about the provider codes.

The app also allows you to receive text alerts for emails you receive in Gmail, which can be useful if you are on the go but need to follow a particular conversation.

Gmail and Google Calendar are also related to the IFTTT (If This Then That) smart device management system, so you can schedule a text With Google Voice, which can be easier than going to your email.

Use business web applications

If you are a company, a web application can be useful

If you want another option to send SMS by email, web services can also help you.

We suggest Message Media, because this web application makes sending texts very easy. It is designed for large and small companies and you can manage SMS, RCS, MMS, Messenger and WhatsApp messages. Although you can try it for free, you will have to sign up for a monthly subscription if you want to continue using it.

Message Media is somewhat similar to using company codes, although it has even more convenient additional functions. Perhaps the most useful of all is the feature that allows you to view your original message and subsequent responses, so you can quickly trace a conversation. If you want to send text messages to international text numbers, you can also use the app for that. For an additional cost, you can access even more features to help you with your business communication needs, such as alpha tags to identify senders, text to speech, dedicated numbers and other useful extras.
