How to export your WhatsApp chats to Telegram

Since January 2021, Telegram has had a function that simplifies the import of WhatsApp conversations. The tool is also compatible with other applications, such as Line and KakaoTalk, although in this guide we will only cover how to take your chats from the Facebook-owned service.

The only drawback is that you have to do the process individually for each of the conversations or groups. However, in Digital Trends in Spanish We tested the tool and it’s fast, so it shouldn’t take you too long either (unless you want to converse an infinite number of chats).

Before starting, it is important that you consider that if your contact does not use Telegram, you will not be able to export the conversations, so we recommend that you invite them beforehand (although we will see an alternative for this scenario later).

  • Step 1: open WhatsApp and select the conversation or group you want to export to Telegram.
  • Step 2: press the three vertical points located in the upper right corner. look for the alternative Plus and then the option Export chat.
  • Step 3: you must decide if you want to include files or not. If you want to keep photos or documents, we recommend doing so.
  • Step 4: A share window will be displayed, in which you must search for the Telegram application.
  • Step 5: in Telegram choose the contact or group. Remember that if the person does not have Telegram, you will not be able to export the conversations.
  • Step 6: Press the button to import.
  • Step 7: The process will start, so you will need to keep the Telegram application open. When you’re done, press Ready.

You will notice that the messages appear with the original date, but they will be accompanied by a caption that identifies them as imported conversations.

What happens if your contact does not have Telegram

If the person whose conversation you want to back up doesn’t use Telegram, don’t worry. You have an alternative to store the messages and retrieve them when you make the decision to join. The downside is that you won’t be able to retrieve the media files as part of the conversation.

  • Step 4: A share window will be displayed and you must choose Google Drive. Press the button Keep. The file is stored with the name of the conversation and with the extension “.txt”.
  • Step 5: when your contact is on Telegram, download the “.txt” file from Google Drive to your mobile device. Locate it on your phone and press the button Share.
  • Step 6: search for the Telegram app and then choose the contact to retrieve the conversation.
  • Step 7: Press the button to import.
  • step 8: The process will start, so you will need to keep the Telegram application open. When you’re done, press Ready.

Notify your contacts that you have left

The Watomatic app

If you also want to notify your contacts that you have left WhatsApp, we recommend using watomatic. It is an open source application available for android, which automatically replies to your messages with personalized text. Also, prevent them from being sent to group chats.

Unlike other similar apps that ask for multiple permissions, Watomatic only asks for access to notifications, which means less compromise for your privacy. The best of all? It’s also compatible with Facebook Messenger, in case you decide to ditch the social media giant altogether.
