If we focus on hardware, the name Huawei is usually associated with mobile telephony, but the manufacturer also has experience in the development of other devices such as laptops.

Earlier this year, Huawei introduced the Huawei MateBook 14, a device with a wide screen and multiple ports. Months later the Huawei MateBook 14s, a model for whose development the manufacturer partnered with Microsoft; This includes an Intel Core i7-11370H processor under its chassis. Do you want to know how this new laptop performs? Continue reading.

Compact and premium design

When you take the Huawei MateBook 14s out of the box, the first thing that catches your eye is its large screen and how it is integrated with the rest of the body. And is that Huawei added a 14.2-inch panel in a very compact chassis. Dimensions are just 313.82mm wide by 229.76mm deep.

It is a not too light device (1.43 kg), but its construction feels solid, with a good compaction job, something common in the brand’s laptops. While there are two colors available (green and gray), my test unit is Space Gray, also a Huawei classic. The device has an elegant, simple and minimalist design with rounded lines.

Returning to the screen, this is a touch LTPS with a resolution of 2,520 x 1,680 pixels with a maximum brightness of 400 nits, which allows us to work without problem outdoors with a lot of sunlight. Personally, I’ve never made sense of touchscreens on laptops, but it’s still an addition that many people might find useful.

One of the aesthetically pleasing features of the MateBook 14s screen is that all the bezels that surround it (they’re not too thick, but there they are) are the same size, which gives it a lot of visual balance. The panel has an aspect ratio of 3: 2, so it is a little higher than usual, something that is especially appreciated in productivity, when we use text editors or spreadsheets.

As it did with the MateBook 14, Huawei integrates four speakers in this MateBook 14s. Overall, it offers very good sound quality and no distortion even at the highest levels. One of the improvements that we find in this model with respect to the previous one is the location of the camera. And is that the 720p webcam is in the upper frame of the screen instead of incorporating it in the keyboard (a very unfortunate location, especially if we have to make a lot of video calls and we do not want to be underprivileged).

The backlit keyboard is very nice, as the key travel is perfect for productivity, as well as the sound of the keys. The same goes for the touchpad, which is large and responds quickly and accurately.

Performance

Inside this beautiful and robust chassis is an Intel Core i7-11370H processor accompanied by 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of SSD storage. Since I received this computer, I have used it to work and its performance has been flawless in all settings.

Matebook 14s

Another improvement (inherited from the previous model) that has made it easier for me to work with this has been the integration of several ports thanks to which I have been able to connect all the peripherals that I use on a day-to-day basis (including a monitor as a second screen) without having to juggle dongles like previous models. In total there are two USB-C ports, a Thunderbolt 4, a USB-A, an HDMI and a Jack audio.

Battery life is another of its strengths. On a normal workday, when writing in web editors, using Photoshop and Office tools, as well as surfing the internet a lot, the battery barely dropped 10 percent every hour. That is, in an eight-hour workday I did not need to charge it at any time, because at the end of the day it still arrived with a 20 percent charge.

It includes a 90 W charger with which I was able to recharge the equipment from 30 to 90 percent in just 45 minutes while using it. Regarding the software, the device arrives from the factory with Windows 10, but it meets the requirements to upgrade to Windows 11.

Conclusions

This equipment is a great choice for those looking for a jewel in productivity and have no problem paying. 1,499 euros, which costs the version with 1 TB of memory or 1,299 euros for 512 GB. For this price you have a device with an impeccable battery life, an excellent keyboard to work with and a powerful processor with which everything works smoothly.
