Huawei WiFi Mesh 3: efficient internet connection for 250 devices | Digital Trends Spanish

There is no doubt: whoever buys a system to complement the home modem will see a better response in electronics that require internet. And for those who have that intention, what about a mesh option like the Huawei Wi-Fi Mesh 3 (AX3000)? We share our experience below.

The Chinese firm announced both this alternative and the Wi-Fi Mesh 7 in Mexico —a little more advanced—, with the intention that consumers “connect” both their current set of devices and the devices that arrive in the future. Both can receive about 250 teams.

In relation to the one that has to be reviewed in these lines, Wi-Fi Mesh 3it is ideal for those spaces with two or three levels: the three-piece package can cover up to 557 square meters and offer a total speed of up to 3,000 Mbps.

First steps

One of the three pieces is the one that connects to the home modem —any one—, since it will serve as the main router, while the others are the ones that must be distributed throughout the rooms. Unlike other mesh systems, it is noteworthy that the link between the main one and the secondary ones happens automatically.

To carry out the initial configuration of the WiFi Mesh 3, it is necessary to download the Huawei IA Life application, which also works as a kind of hub for the other smart products of the brand.

Also, from the app you can have different administration functions, such as knowing which devices have access to the created network, parental control and activating the guest network, ideal for when there are visitors at home.

It is practically a fact that any device can be connected to the system, since a dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5 GHz) is created. For clarification, some older smart plugs or laptops only support the 2.4 GHz frequency, which may offer slower speeds when compared to the other.

In the 5 GHz frequency, a speed of up to 2,402 Mbps can be reached with the Huawei WiFi Mesh 3, while the 2.4 GHz frequency will provide a performance of up to 574 Mbps.

In addition to offering connection to some 250 devices, WiFi Mesh 3 has other specifications that make it a powerful and complete solution, such as HarmonyOS Mesh+ —establishes the most optimal signal for the devices—, latency of 50 milliseconds (that of other proposals is 240 milliseconds, according to Huawei), one-touch direct network access for those phones that support the NFC standard (no password input required), WPA3 encryption (distinguished by its capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks) and four high-performance power amplifiers for a strong signal and wider coverage.

The specifications of this mesh system indicate that it is compatible with Wi-Fi 6 Plus, like other of the company’s proposals, which allows it to reach the total speed of 3,000 Mbps in order to perform simultaneous tasks without interruptions, such as streaming 4K or 8K content, online gaming, and video calls.

Whoever buys the package will not have to worry about this label, since they will be able to connect their devices with Wi-Fi 6 or other previous standards without any inconvenience.

Although it was not possible to link the 250 devices to the Huawei mesh system in the tests carried out (does anyone come close to that number?), about 10 were communicated to execute different tasks simultaneously, such as streaming content and calls in video. The internet signal remained stable and offered good performance and coverage, along with other proposals that have passed through our hands.

What may delight more than one is the fact that the pieces that will act as secondary are automatically linked to the main router and the possibility of immediate connection for cell phones with NFC.

Finally, each unit has three Ethernet ports, which are WAN/LAN, that is, the downlink network cable can be inserted in any space, for example.

Huawei AI Life App

We have found the Huawei IA Life app intuitive enough for anyone to manage the various options they have with WiFi Mesh 3. The following are especially noteworthy:

  • Parental control. Lets you add previously linked equipment in order to establish personalized connection and disconnection schedules.
  • List of connected devices. It allows you to view all the connected electronics and, if you want, block them or put speed limits on them, both for uploading and downloading.
  • guest network. It is possible to set it with or without a password, as well as put a duration and speed limit on it.
  • Wi-Fi management. This option makes it easy to change your primary network name and password, create an alternate Wi-Fi 5 network, and set signal strength, among other options.

What is true is that Huawei IA Life, working as a hub for other smart equipment of the brand, has complaints in the sense that people cannot link devices such as certain models of hearing aids or audio systems. With the WiFi Mesh 3 we did not have that problem.

The Huawei WiFi Mesh 3 is a recommended option for those looking to extend the local connection to any corner of the house, with all the advantages offered by a mesh system, from a single wireless network to different management tools. Also, it may be cheaper when compared to other recent solutions.

Its compatibility with Wi-Fi 6 gives you the benefit of being prepared for next-generation equipment that is purchased in the future.

Especially remote work and online classes made it clear how important it is to have stable Wi-Fi in any room, so a mesh system like Huawei’s makes perfect sense today.
