According to astronomers, even though the universe is constantly expanding, collisions between galaxies are not unusual in space.
Good evidence for this is the image captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, which shows a “dangerous dance” of two colliding galaxies.
They are called NGC 5953 and NGC 5954, which form a set that was baptized as Arp 91.
According to scientists, they are two spiral galaxies, but they look different due to their orientation relative to Earth. Both are more than 100 million light years from our planet.
“Most astronomers think that collisions between spiral galaxies lead to the formation of other types of galaxies, known as elliptical galaxies,” says a NASA statement.
“However, these massive and extremely energetic collisions occur on timescales that dwarf the life of a human being.”
Of course, human beings today are not going to be able to observe how this collision evolves, since it involves processes that take hundreds of millions of years.
It is a phenomenon that the Milky Way will also experience, but in about 4.5 billion years, when our galaxy collides with neighboring Andromeda.
Arp 91 provides a particularly vivid example of galactic interaction. NGC 5953 is clearly pulling on NGC 5954, which appears to be spiraling downward, ”adds the space agency.
“The immense gravitational pull of the two galaxies causes them to interact. Such gravitational interactions are common and an important part of galactic evolution. “
