I already have a couple of months with the MacBook Air with the M1 chip, designed by Manzana, and what I can say in advance is that I have never had such a “quiet” laptop on my desk. It’s not the first time I’ve used macOS, but this laptop It represents my return to the operating system of the Californian firm after having been for two consecutive years with different machines with Windows 10. This is my experience.

MacBook Air M1 experience
To begin with, I must say that I acquired the entry-level MacBook Air (M1), whose price without promotion for the Mexican market – from where I am writing these lines – is 26,000 pesos. With this money it would be possible to buy the new 128 GB iPhone 13 Pro, for example; So it is not a cheap laptop.
In exchange for this cost, the user receives a 13.3-inch Retina display (2,560 x 1,600 pixel resolution), FaceTime HD camera, Magic Keyboard with backlit keys, Touch ID that allows everything from unlocking the MacBook Air to making purchases in the App Store , 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.
While these specifications seem discreet, especially when there are other options from other manufacturers with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of space, Apple shows that it knows how to combine its software and hardware in a masterful way, in order to deliver a powerful notebook.
Regarding inputs, it only integrates a Jack 3.5mm headphone jack and two Thunderbolt ports that support charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 3, USB 4, and USB 3.1 Gen 2. Thus, it is practically a fact that it will be necessary to use some hub USB Type-C to connect a monitor as a second display, an external hard drive, and even an additional webcam.
One of the trends in laptops of recent generation is that they have the least number of physical connectors, especially to achieve modern and slim designs. And yes, more than one person may be satisfied with connecting to the internet via wireless, making video calls with the camera that integrates your machine and having all your content in the cloud, for which no additional peripheral is required.
It’s not my case. Although I do not require wired internet thanks to the fact that I have an extender, my desk cannot lack, at the very least, an external monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse, and a portable hard drive in which I store video clips. So he hub USB Type C is the medium that allows me to link between these devices and the MacBook Air.
At what point do I only use the laptop, without any extra accessories? 90 percent of the time I work in a single room, where my desk and all the other equipment necessary for my professional work are, however, when I have to move to another space in the house or go out for a considerable time, the computer strips itself of everything to accompany me. It’s worth mentioning that its Force Touch keyboard and Trackpad are comfortable, intuitive, and accurate, allowing for smooth navigation and more than satisfying article writing.
With a known essence
It is true that macOS Big Sur, the factory operating system of the MacBook Air (M1), offers several novelties with respect to the “engine” of the last Apple machine that I used back in 2018. However, the essence that makes known you are in front of a laptop designed by those from Cupertino.
The Control Center in the upper right has enough shortcuts to connect a wireless headset or mirror the screen to another compatible device quickly. Or also to change networks or enable dark mode in advance.
Beyond the aspects that “please” the eye – which will be even more with the arrival of macOS Monterey before the end of 2021 – and how quiet Apple’s thin computer is, what really stands out is the performance it shows in each one of the platforms it runs, regardless of whether they are productivity or entertainment.
Even in video editing it does not seem to suffer either, or it did not when I edited some personal clips through the application DaVinci Resolve, which is freely accessible. I mention it because with other computers with Windows 10 and 8 GB RAM it is difficult or almost impossible to carry out this task.
Of course, if you are looking for a more fit device for video or image editing, it is best to turn to the MacBook Pro category or a desktop computer from Apple itself, in which it is also increasingly extending its M1 processor .
A satisfying comeback?
I had high expectations with the latest version of the MacBook Air to date, especially since Apple is known to be a company that has its roots in the manufacture of computer equipment and that understands what it means to offer a good user experience.
Yes, more than one point can be mentioned that could give problems later with this notebook, such as storage and the low number of ports (again, the inclusion of other peripherals is almost imminent). But there is nothing to object to when talking about his answer, which seems to have been tailored to the needs of whoever sits in front of his screen, regardless of whether he is a student or a professional.
Therefore, there is no regret here: I return to macOS with a good taste in my mouth, with the feeling of having a laptop that performs well in the present and that it seems that it will “understand” how to respond optimally in the future.
