Ionity will invest 700 million euros to multiply its fast chargers in Europe and rival the Tesla network

Ionity has announced a investment of 700 million euros to reach 7,000 fast charging points in Europe by 2025. Driven by manufacturers such as BMW, Hyundai, Ford or Audi, the electric charger company has received the help of the investment fund Blackrock to expand its availability in Europe and try to rival the Tesla’s network of superchargers, currently vastly outnumbering Ionity’s.

In about three years, Ionity wants almost multiply by five your electric charging points of 350 kW. It currently has about 1,500 points in 24 countries, which it intends to multiply to 7,000, spread over more than 1,000 stations.

One fast charging station every 200 kilometers

Ionity’s goal is to have a fast recharge point every 150 to 200 kilometers, but they are still far from that goal. The network created in 2017 has a long way to rival Tesla, which has more than 6,000 superchargers in Europe. A Tesla that we remember that from 2022 has confirmed that it will allow other manufacturers to use its network.

Ionity explains that it will build more than 600 new stations and 5,500 recharging points with 350 kW with the CCS standard. These new points will be located on motorways and close to large cities. further the new stations will have more points, between 6 and 12.

Ionity’s situation in Spain also has a lot of room for improvement. Today there are 12 stations built, a far cry from the nearly 40 Tesla stations.

When charging the electric car is more expensive than putting gasoline: Ionity superchargers raise their rates and set off the alarms

“The trust and investment of all shareholders will accelerate the growth of Ionity, the expansion of our high-power charging network across Europe and, more broadly, the decarbonisation of the mobility sector,” said Michael Hajesch, CEO. by Ionity. We will have to wait to see if this investment represents a significant boost to the electric charger network and if it contributes to stabilize prices and improve service.

In 2017 they promised that by 2020 they would reach 400 stations and despite the economic situation and the pandemic have met their objectives.
