iPhone SE (2022) vs. Galaxy A52 5G: processor or screen? | Digital Trends Spanish

The newly launched iPhone SE is the third installment in Apple’s affordable “Special Edition” range of phones. But, in a market saturated with Android devices, it is not without rivals. Perhaps the most notable is Samsung’s A52, which is why we decided to take on the iPhone SE (2022) vs. Galaxy A52 5G to help you decide which is the most powerful budget cell phone.

Apple recycled the design of the 2017 iPhone 8 with the powerful Apple A15 Bionic processor from the iPhone 13, while introducing 5G connectivity, an improved camera, a larger battery than previous iPhone SEs, and a very competitive price of $429. Dollars.

Design, screen and durability

Let’s not go off the rails. The iPhone SE (2022) is not the most attractive cell phone you will see this year. It reuses the design of the iPhone 8, which means you get a small phone with big bezels on the forehead and chin, plus a Home button.

If you’re into retro designs, or flat out big screens just aren’t your thing, you might find it charming, but compared to the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G’s sleek edge-to-edge screen, it looks pretty uninspiring.

Samsung’s device also has an edge in the display department. With a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED and a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels, it has 407 pixels per inch (dpi). Instead, the iPhone SE features a 4.7-inch 1,334 x 750-pixel Retina LCD.

This equates to around 326 ppi, and when you factor in the noticeable size reduction, the SE’s screen isn’t nearly as impressive as the A52’s. Especially when the latter supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which provides smooth scrolling.

However, one of the areas of parity is that both phones have received an IP67 rating. This means that they can tolerate being submerged in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

Of course, this isn’t enough for the iPhone SE to make up for its less attractive design and unimpressive display, so this round is an easy win for the Samsung Galaxy A52.

Performance, battery life and charging

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G, and it also uses 6 GB of RAM as standard. This makes it a very capable phone, and it runs pretty much all the latest games and apps without a hitch.

Meanwhile, the modest iPhone SE (2022) comes with the very powerful Apple A15 Bionic, as well as 4 GB of RAM. Using that processor — built with 5nm transistors — makes Apple’s phone blazingly fast for such a small device, and as solid as the A52 is, the SE has a distinct advantage.

Unfortunately, the SE commits the increasingly unforgivable crime of coming with 64GB of internal memory as standard (although for $479 you can have it with 128GB). That’s a pretty measly amount of storage in 2022, especially if you’re used to taking 20 photos of the same scene.

The A52 offers a more generous 128GB of memory as standard, which is roughly twice the fun. In addition, it has a slot for a microSD card, so you can easily expand the storage space.

Right now, it’s hard to say which device has the longest battery life, as we haven’t had a chance to fully review the iPhone SE yet. The Galaxy A52 has a 4,500mAh battery that can last for two days if you’re a moderate user, making it pretty good by today’s standards.

The iPhone SE (2022) comes with a larger battery than its predecessor, but the capacity is not yet known. So we can’t say if it could outlast the A52, and since the iPhone SE (2020) had a fairly average battery, not sure it will.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G comes with a 64-megapixel wide lens, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 5-megapixel depth lens, and a 5-megapixel macro lens on the rear. The iPhone SE (2022), meanwhile, comes with a single 12 MP camera.

So you might think the A52 offers a much better camera, but it doesn’t. Yes, the iPhone SE only has one lens, but Apple’s software squeezes every ounce of quality out of it.

Like the SE before it, it takes very natural and balanced photos in most conditions. It also benefits from the addition of Apple’s Deep Fusion technology, Smart HDR 4, as well as an enhanced Portrait mode that uses the same Lighting effects seen on iPhone 13.

In other words, its main camera lens is up there with the best in the industry. The same cannot be said for the A52, which despite having a 64 MP main lens continues to suffer from the same inconsistency and over-saturation problems as other Samsung phones that preceded it.

So even with an additional ultra-wide and macro lens, you probably won’t enjoy the A52’s camera as much as the SE’s.

Operating system and updates

A woman makes a call with a Samsung Galaxy A52 5G phone.

The Samsung Galaxy A52 5G has been updated to Android 12 with OneUI 4, which by the way is remarkably fast, with plenty of customization options to suit your particular style.

It’s no better or worse than iOS 15 on the iPhone SE, though Apple’s software historically favors simplicity and security over customization and complexity. It is largely a matter of taste which operating system you prefer, there is no doubt that the iPhone will receive more updates throughout its life.

Samsung has committed to three basic Android updates for the A52, while you’ll likely get five or six with the SE. This means that the Apple cell phone takes the victory.

Special features

Apple's 2022 iPhone SE is shown on stage with Tim Cook.

Both phones support 5G, which may not be remarkable today, but is still commendable for phones this cheap. That said, both devices only support the longer range 5G frequency range, sub-6 Hz, and not the faster mmWave bands.

However, sub-6Hz 5G is still a huge leap forward in terms of speed over 4G, so most people won’t mind. Both phones also come with fingerprint sensors. The iPhone SE has Touch ID through its home button, and the A52 has an in-display sensor.

Unfortunately, the scanner of the Galaxy A52 has some well documented issues, and our review found that it often refuses to recognize any input. This is not the case with the iPhone SE scanner, as anachronistic as the home button in 2022.

Other than these two features, neither of the two phones really has any quirks or novelties to speak of. They’re just very affordable phones that, on the whole, turn out to be very good.

Price and availability

The Galaxy A52 5G starts at $499 USD and is available directly from Samsung’s website. It is compatible with the main operators in the United States and can be purchased in almost all large online stores.

The iPhone SE (2022) starts at $429 USD and goes up to $579 USD for the version with 256 GB of internal memory. It can be pre-ordered from Apple and will be compatible with all major networks.

Overall winner: iPhone SE (2022)

It’s not a dominant win, but the iPhone SE (2022) is a better phone overall than the Galaxy A52 5G. It certainly doesn’t look as good and its screen isn’t as attractive, but it beats Samsung’s device in several key areas.

It offers faster performance, has a noticeably better primary camera, and will be supported for updates for longer. It also supports 5G, which, for a phone priced at $429, is pretty good.

On the other hand, the Galaxy A52 is still an excellent low-cost cell phone with a large storage capacity, so if you are an Android or Samsung fan, it will surely not disappoint you.
