It is false that frozen food stores are obliged to maintain “the same temperature as bookstores”, as Feijóo says

The leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has spread this Sunday a hoax about the energy saving plan approved by the Government to comply with the requirements of reducing gas consumption agreed by the European Union. “Proposing the same temperatures to a frozen food store as to a bookstore, setting the same temperatures to a fruit store as to a clothing store is simply an improvisation”, he has said.

But no, not all businesses will have to keep the air conditioning at 27 degrees as a limit. There is flexibility depending on the type of business and the existing labor legislation, as stated in the royal decree law in which the measures are developed, published in the BOE last Tuesday.

There has been no rectification: the rule has always established that the temperature thresholds must be adjusted to comply with the labor legislation on safety and health in the workplace —Royal Decree 486/1997— and that the premises that justify “the need to maintain special environmental conditions” or have specific regulations will not have to comply with the 27 degree restriction either. Although, in any case, in the example of frozen food stores, the most important thing will be the temperature of the freezers.

The Minister of Education, Pilar Alegría, has responded to Feijóo that what he has said “is simply false” and has stated that he expects “a little more solvency” from the leader of the popular.

The Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, insisted on Friday on that dimension on the flexibility of the temperature and, specifically, specified that bars and restaurants can limit the use of air conditioning around “25 degrees ”, taking into account the recommendations of the labor legislation: “You cannot ask workers who are in conditions of important physical exercise not to have the conditions that the labor law guarantees with respect to the maximum and minimum temperatures”. Businesses and establishments must justify when they do not apply the temperature limit on the thermostat.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo has also requested this Sunday the convening of the Conference of Presidents next week to address the plan and has accused the President of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, of “improvising” the meeting of the Energy Sector Conference that will take place this Monday and that will have the vice president Teresa Ribera and the Minister of Industry, Reyes Maroto. For the popular leader, it would have been better to address the regional presidents and not the councillors. “Sánchez flies over, in the strict sense, the problems of the majority of Spaniards, instead of facing them with agreements, with dialogue, with reflection, with a good diagnosis, with a good proposal. He just improvises, taking unilateral action,” Feijóo has claimed.
